"Come in first and set your things down."
Ruby steadied herself, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes, trying to look friendly. None of this was the girl's fault, after all. Now that she was a mother herself, Ruby found it hard not to feel a little more patient with girls so young and naive.
Still, the whole situation had happened so abruptly that her feeble attempt at a laugh sounded more like she was about to cry.
"Th-thank you!"
The girl nodded obediently, hefting her suitcase. Instead of putting it on the bed, she set it down next to Ruby's and took a moment to catch her breath.
Ruby glanced at Mira, still fast asleep, and decided she'd try once more to reason with the housing office.
"This decision's already final. Management signed off on it," the supervisor said, dropping a document stamped with a bright red seal onto the desk in front of her.
Ruby picked it up and her heart dropped. It was an official notice, ordering her to vacate her job and her room immediately.
"But we have a signed contract! This is a clear violation of—"
Bang—
The supervisor slammed her mug down, her previously lazy eyes now sharp as a blade.
"You want to talk labor laws with me?"
"Ruby, let's be honest here. Every other resident in the staff dorm is a permanent employee. On the payroll, with full benefits. What about you?"
"If you just behave and leave quietly, you'll still get your paycheck for this month. No ugly scenes. But if you make trouble, it'll look bad for everyone."
She stared Ruby down, the threat plain as day.
Ruby shook with fury, her breath coming fast and uneven. The supervisor wasn't wrong, not really—she was just on a trial contract, like an intern. Even if she tried to fight the dismissal, just hiring a lawyer would eat up months of her life.
Ruby drew a shaky breath. The supervisor's words echoed: the paperwork was stamped, the decision made. And the new girl? She'd already met her.
