Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 408

Ruby Grayson only narrowed her eyes slightly, her expression betraying no real surprise.

After all, she’d seen this coming.

With Hanley Grayson’s scandals making headlines, not even his iron grip on the Grayson Group’s board could save him from being swept away by the tide. If he didn’t step down soon and let someone more capable take charge, the Grayson Group would collapse like a house of cards. Ruby knew Hanley—selfish to the core—would do whatever he could to squeeze out every last penny while he still had the chance. Still, she hadn’t expected him to stoop so low as to saddle Frieda Steele with an astronomical debt.

A weight pressed down on Ruby’s chest.

She glanced up at the sky. The sunset painted the clouds in flaming colors, but dusk was already creeping in, bleeding away the last traces of daylight.

Ruby shot a sidelong look at Sylas Cunningham. “Keep an eye on Frieda. I want to know exactly what she’s planning.”

When Ruby had sent that anonymous email to Frieda’s inbox, she’d already guessed Frieda would come to the Quinborough police station to see Gennifer Grayson—if not out of concern, then at least to verify the “truth” in the email. That’s why she and Sylas had gotten here ahead of time.

She was curious.

Despite all the rumors swirling online about the Grayson family, Frieda had shown no reaction. Was Hanley and Gennifer’s deception just that convincing, or had Frieda simply chosen not to see the truth?

Ruby lowered her gaze, then headed for the car.

Meanwhile, at the Grayson estate—

Hanley sat in his study, his face a stormy shade of gray.

“Mr. Grayson, are these all the items you intend to sell? Including this mansion we’re standing in?”

The appraisers, gloved in pristine white, handled the mountain of valuables stacked on the desk with expert care.

There were several properties in Hanley’s name, plus a trove of jewelry belonging to Frieda and Gennifer.

Hanley gripped the bank card in his pocket—the sum total of everything he’d gotten from dumping his shares of the Grayson Group at rock-bottom prices. At first, thanks to Ruby’s relentless smear campaign, the shares had been impossible to sell. But just earlier today, a mysterious investor had swept in and bought every last one.

“Yes! No—no need for an auction. I’ll sell at the minimum price, as long as you transfer the money fast.”

He seemed to remember something, hastily correcting himself.

The lead appraiser’s eyes lit up, his ingratiating smile growing even wider. “Of course, Mr. Grayson. We can do that.”

“It’s not the cabinet I want you to see. It’s what’s inside.”

He opened the doors.

A flash of pure, radiant white dazzled everyone in the room.

The three appraisers froze, momentarily stunned by the sight.

Inside was a wedding gown—brilliantly white, impossibly pristine. Even shut away in this plain, forgotten cabinet, its aura of sacredness was unmistakable.

“This is…”

The appraiser approached with reverence, swapping her gloves for a fresh pair before she dared touch the dress.

Her eyes sparkled. She quickly summoned their company’s top jewelry expert.

They pored over every inch of fabric with magnifying glasses, voices trembling with astonishment. “At a glance, it’s clear—the gems on this dress aren’t just tiny chips. These are full one-carat diamonds, hundreds—maybe thousands—of them.”
