Gennifer stared at Bennett, long since accustomed to his respectful deference.

Ever since Cassian had sent her to jail, she’d given up on that man completely; whatever lingering warmth she’d once shown Bennett was gone without a trace.

Bennett’s eyes crinkled with his usual pleasant smile, but his next words made Gennifer’s heart jolt. “Take them outside.”

No sooner had he spoken than the bodyguards behind him surged forward, seizing the doctors, nurses, and funeral home staff who’d been standing behind Gennifer.

Her expression changed instantly. “Bennett, what are you doing?!”

His smile didn’t falter, but now it seemed oddly chilling. “This is Mr. Veyne’s order,” he said, the curve of his lips sharpening.

A cold sense of dread crept through Gennifer.

In the brief moment she hesitated, the three were already being herded into a waiting car, panic-stricken and calling desperately to her. “Miss Gennifer! What’s happening? What does this mean? Didn’t you and Mr. Grayson ask us here? What’s going on?!”

The scene dissolved into chaos. Both Gennifer and Hanley went pale with alarm.

Gennifer stepped forward quickly, blocking the car door. She locked eyes with Bennett. “Let them go. I invited them. You have no right to take them.”

At this, hope flared in the eyes of the terrified trio—they began struggling to get out of the car. But the bodyguards weren’t amateurs. One pressed down harder, making the funeral home worker cry out in pain.

The other two, slightly more composed, stopped resisting, but beads of sweat gathered on their brows, betraying their fear.

Watching the standoff, the doctor and nurse exchanged uneasy glances. The tension in the air was suffocating.

“Bennett, may I ask why Mr. Veyne wants to take us away?” The doctor’s voice was calm and polite, but there was pleading in his eyes.

Somewhere along the way, Bennett’s smile had vanished, replaced by a cold sternness that reminded everyone of Cassian himself. “Mr. Veyne will speak to you personally. You’ll understand soon enough.”
