Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 44

A year ago, it had also been a rainy evening. She stood in the drawing room of Northridge Manor, staring blankly at the broad leaves outside, glistening and heavy with rain. She watched them until dusk melted into night.

Back then, she still loved Cassian, though her heart, once so fiercely devoted to him, had grown weary.

And now—

Ruby brushed her fingers over the divorce papers, focusing on the bold word at the top. Her gaze was cool and indifferent, betraying no emotion—except when her thoughts drifted to Mira, sleeping soundly in the next room. Then, just for a moment, her eyes softened.

It wasn't heartbreak—it was simply clarity.

"Ruby!"

A knock sounded at the door. Ruby quickly set the divorce agreement back on the coffee table and went to answer.

"How about we celebrate our reunion? My treat. Let's go out for dinner," Cameron Lockridge declared, standing on the porch in a crisp suit—cheeks flushed, eyes bright.

She hadn't expected him back so soon.

Caught off guard, Ruby instinctively tried to decline. "You've already done so much by letting Mira and me stay here. I can't ask you to spend more on us."

"If you put it that way—don't forget, you were once the top attorney in the field. You had the patience to coach me back in law school. I still owe you for those private lessons, you know."

"Ruby, are you treating me like a stranger now?"

Cameron feigned indignation, making her laugh despite herself.

Sensing her guard was down, he made the decision for both of them. "It's settled then. Go grab Mira, and I'll get the car."

With the conversation at this point, Ruby couldn't refuse. Smiling faintly, she turned to the bedroom.

Cameron exhaled, satisfied, and wandered into the living room to wait. He'd barely sunk into the sofa when he spotted a document on the coffee table.

Curiosity got the better of him. He picked it up—and froze. It was a signed divorce agreement.
