The woman’s brows drew together, her eyes shadowed with tension. Almost on instinct, she reached out to grip the cardboard box, an urgent need to discover what lay inside prickling at her nerves.
Hanley watched her movements intently, and, as if anticipating her next step, handed her a letter opener.
She glanced up at him, catching only the brim of his low-slung cap and the shadow that obscured his face. Still, she accepted the tool without hesitation and, with swift efficiency, cut open the box.
Inside was a breathtaking wedding gown, its surface shimmering with glints of crystal and iridescent fabric that seemed to catch every ray of light.
Her expression shifted in an instant, and she could hear the wild thumping of her own heart.
“Dad! Mom!”
Without thinking, she dialed her parents. The moment the call connected, her voice burst out, anxious and loud.
“Sis sent the wedding dress! She mailed it home!”
Her voice rang out, but the commotion on the other end was even louder.
“What? Are you at the door right now?!”
“Pearl, keep the courier there for a moment—whatever compensation he needs, we’ll cover it! Your mother and I are coming down!”
The old voices, though heavy with age, were suddenly filled with an unexpected vigor.
Pearl hurried to hold the courier back. “Hi, I’m sure you heard my parents just now. Whatever you’ve lost in time today, we’ll make it up to you—double if needed. Would you mind waiting a little longer?”
The courier hesitated, then nodded stiffly. “Alright.” His answer was muffled, prompting Pearl to glance at him again, but she quickly looked away, not wanting to make things awkward.
“Pearl! Where’s the courier? Is he still here?”
Moments later, her parents emerged, supporting each other as they made their way outside. Though their steps were unsteady with age, both wore tasteful jewelry, her mother’s hair still a lustrous black, her father standing tall and alert. There was something about them that set them apart from ordinary elderly couples.
The courier briefly lifted his gaze before quickly lowering his eyes.
