Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 474

When Bennett saw the location pop up on his phone, his eyes lit up. Without a second thought, he snapped his laptop shut, grabbed his briefcase and the portable safe, and hurried out of the office.

The park she’d chosen was as nondescript as they came.

He was honestly surprised she’d picked such a plain spot for their meeting.

It wasn’t until he spotted the gazebo in the distance—and the woman sitting there, dressed just as she’d described over the phone—that Bennett felt certain he was in the right place. He strode over.

“You must be Gayle?”

The sudden sound of his voice made Gayle jump, snapping her out of her thoughts.

She twisted her fingers nervously and gave a tiny nod. “That’s me. You’re from Veyne & Co.?”

She looked up, studying him with open caution.

Impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, he radiated the kind of quiet authority she’d always imagined from someone representing a big firm like Veyne & Co. The realization only made her more anxious.

“There’s no need to be nervous.”

Catching on to her discomfort, Bennett softened his tone and sat down across from her, careful not to crowd her.

He tapped the sleek silver safe resting on his lap. “Here’s the cash we agreed on. Think of it as a deposit—twenty percent upfront. You can count it yourself if you’d like.”

The safe gleamed with high-tech polish, drawing Gayle’s gaze almost against her will.

Twenty percent… That’s… two hundred thousand!

She clenched her trembling hands together, doing her best to steady herself.

“W-what do you want to ask?” Her voice came out shaky, but not from fear—from excitement.

Bennett smiled, all polite restraint. “I just need to confirm something. The woman you mentioned on the phone—the boss’s wife—is it her?”

He held out a photo between his fingers. Violet’s face stared out from the glossy print.

“Yes! That’s her!” Gayle nodded frantically.

It was definitely her. Gayle had worked as a housekeeper in that woman’s home for a few days—days that had felt like nothing but humiliation and mistreatment, all thanks to Violet.

Resentment burned in Gayle’s chest. She would recognize Violet anywhere.

She thought of how Violet had run straight to Hanley Grayson to complain about her, how she’d docked half her wages without a second thought. That money was supposed to save her child’s life.

If they could be so heartless, then she couldn’t be blamed for doing what she had to.

“She’s at the young professionals’ apartments on Kingsfoil Avenue. I can take you there right now, if you want!” Gayle’s tone dripped with fury.
