“Rue, just wait a little longer. The medicine’s just starting to work. Give it a minute and you’ll feel much better.”
There was no mistaking the hunger in Morgan’s eyes or his voice.
Ruby was already slipping away, her mind foggy, unable to understand what he was saying. She just stared at him, lost. “What are you talking about? Medicine? Did I take something?”
It was exactly this dazed, vulnerable look that made Morgan all the more obsessed.
He was patient now—infinitely patient. With a tenderness that felt almost practiced, he reached out and stroked her hair. “That’s right, Rue. You took your medicine. Now Morgan will stay with you. Tomorrow, you’ll feel fine.”
Ruby seemed completely unable to process his words. She stared blankly, then gave a slow, confused nod. “Medicine. Sleep. Better. That’s what Grandma used to say, too.”
Her voice was soft, barely a whisper, and heartbreakingly sweet.
Morgan’s hands moved to help her slip off her coat.
If a stranger had walked in just then, they might have praised Morgan for his gentle care. After all, who would think that behind such a handsome and calm face lurked thoughts so vile and twisted?
As Ruby’s coat slipped away, her pale, flawless shoulders were exposed—her skin as smooth as ivory.
Morgan’s eyes darkened, a flicker of something dangerous passing through them. He met Ruby’s dazed gaze. He should have felt guilty. Instead, all he felt was excitement.
He was finally going to have her.
Ruby was never one to give up easily; she was decisive, too. She’d once loved Cassian with everything she had, but after prison, she’d divorced him without hesitation. Someone with her temper should have cut Cassian out entirely, but somehow, he was still in her life.
Morgan’s jealousy burned hotter with every passing second. He could only blame it on the fact that she and Cassian had once shared a bed, that Cassian had given her a child. No matter what Morgan did, Ruby wouldn’t let him in. So maybe, if he could have what Cassian once had…
His thoughts spiraled. Just imagining himself by Ruby’s side from then on made him tremble with anticipation.
He closed his eyes and leaned in, ready to claim the lips he’d dreamed about for so long.
