“You idiot! If you’re going to pull a stunt like this, at least have the sense to keep it discreet!”
Hanley pressed his fingers to his temple, his voice thundering through the room. He jabbed Gennifer in the forehead, not holding back in the slightest.
Within moments, an angry red mark bloomed across Gennifer’s pale skin.
She bit her lip, swallowing down the frustration that was coiling in her chest, left with nowhere to vent it but the floor. All she could do was keep her head bowed, silently pleading for help.
She had happened to be near the restaurant when she saw Morgan half-carrying Ruby—who looked completely out of it—into the hotel. It hadn’t taken her more than a second to realize what he was about to do, so she’d hurriedly called Hanley over. The situation was so urgent she hadn’t had time to set up a new account to contact the press, but she had warned everyone to keep her name out of it.
Gennifer’s fingers tightened until her knuckles turned white.
What exactly had happened in that hotel room?
Morgan was always scheming, always ten steps ahead. How could he have fallen on his face like this?
She couldn’t wrap her head around it, but she knew one thing for sure: right now, the most important thing was to bury the headlines and issue a statement before things got worse.
“Dad, what’s the point of blaming me now? What am I supposed to do?”
Her voice was hoarse from crying. Off to the side, Violet frowned but said nothing, simply glancing at Hanley, waiting for him to respond.
Hanley’s gaze was icy cold as he looked Gennifer up and down, his expression sharp enough to make her shrink back.
“This entire mess… The Grayson family is at a critical moment. We need public support, and you just had to create a scandal this big! And our family isn’t what it used to be. When you got out of jail, you’d already burned through every ounce of goodwill we had with the other old families. Now you come to me for help—what do you expect me to do?”
His words were cutting, the disappointment plain in his voice.
Gennifer’s mouth fell open, shock flickering in her eyes. “What… what do you mean?”
“Dad, are you just going to leave me to fend for myself?!”
She lunged forward, grabbing Hanley’s hand in desperation. “Dad, you’re my father! If you don’t help me, no one will!”
Annoyance flickered across Hanley’s face. He started to pull away, but Violet stepped forward and gently caught his arm. “Hanley, Gennifer is still our daughter. Maybe we can come up with another solution?”
Hanley frowned, shooting her a puzzled look.
They’d agreed long ago to leave the country—and to leave Gennifer behind. Given what had just happened, abandoning her made perfect sense. Why was Violet pleading for her now?
She shot him a meaningful glance, giving his hand a soft, deliberate pat.
