Ruby’s gaze shifted, her lips pressed together in silence.
Watching her reaction, Gennifer assumed her words were finally having an effect. After all, Ruby had always been so gullible, believing whatever anyone told her. Although she couldn’t understand how Ruby had changed so drastically since getting out of prison, Gennifer refused to believe someone could become a completely different person in such a short time.
Gathering her courage, Gennifer stepped forward and reached out to take Ruby’s hand—only for Ruby to pull away, her eyes growing noticeably colder.
Startled, Gennifer quickly withdrew her hand, putting on her most dejected face. “I know you don’t want to forgive us. But the family has explained things to you so many times. Mom and Dad are good people—they just worried that I’d be lonely, a foster child in the Grayson family, so they paid me a bit more attention. It’s not that they don’t love you. I never thought you’d misunderstand them, or even be so biased and distant toward me.”
The same speech, over and over. Ruby had heard it so many times she could practically recite it herself.
She rubbed her temples, masking her irritation with a raised hand before letting it fall away, her expression blank and cold as ever.
“Let’s set everything else aside for now. Why are you here this time?” Ruby folded her arms, her fingers drumming absently against her own sleeve.
Hearing Ruby’s measured response, Gennifer’s eyes lit up, and she rushed to explain, “I really just wanted to clear up this misunderstanding between us. I don’t want you to be misled by appearances. And I hoped we could finally let go of the past. Mom’s been living alone since she and Dad separated—she misses you terribly.”
Her eyes shone with sincerity; to anyone unaware of the truth, she would have been convincing.
“Come home with me, Ruby,” Gennifer pleaded gently. “Everything Mom and Dad said before, that was just out of anger. How could they ever really disown you? Since you left, Mom finally realized just how much you mean to her. We all regret what happened.”
Each word was carefully chosen, and she sounded truly heartfelt.
But Ruby saw right through her, and all she felt was a cold, bitter detachment.
Suddenly, someone in the crowd spoke up.
“That’s right, Miss Ruby. When people are anxious, they might act in ways they don’t mean. I’m sure Miss Gennifer was just desperate to help.”
Instinctively, Ruby scanned the crowd, but there were so many faces, stretching out endlessly, that she couldn’t spot the speaker.
