Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 504

Her words were so heavy, so weighted with emotion, that even those already troubled fell silent.

One by one, they turned to watch Ruby’s face, searching for her reaction.

Meanwhile, behind Sylas, the Steeles clenched their fists in unison as Gennifer’s words echoed in the air. Their gazes met, and in that moment, each saw the same tension and bitterness mirrored in the others’ eyes.

Mental health issues? The Frieda they remembered had always been lively and carefree—the last person anyone would expect to fall apart inside. How could she possibly be struggling like this?

“Don’t worry,” Sylas murmured, quickly picking up on the shift in mood around him. He bent his head and spoke softly, reassuring the group. “Gennifer’s words aren’t always to be trusted.”

“Sylas, we want to see her,” the elderly matriarch said, lifting her head to meet his gaze. “If what that adopted daughter says is true… do you think you could let Ruby go with us to see her?”

She’d spent her whole life carrying herself with dignity and ease, but now age had brought her to this—pleading with someone young enough to be her grandson. The taste of it was bitter, but Frieda was still their child. They had raised her, loved her, and couldn’t bear to think of her lost to herself like this.

Sylas looked at their earnest faces, momentarily at a loss for words. At last, he nodded. “If it really comes to that, I’ll do my best to talk to Ruby.”

Relief washed over the group at his promise.

The old patriarch clasped Sylas’s arm, his gratitude clear as he patted him. “Good man. With someone like you looking out for Ruby, we can rest a little easier.”

Sylas’s cheeks flushed a bright red. He glanced aside, clearly uncomfortable with the praise.

The two elders turned their eyes back to Ruby, who stood a short distance away. Pearl tilted her head, stealing a glance at Sylas out of the corner of her eye.

“So, young man—this soulmate you were searching for in Quinborough recently… Don’t tell me it’s our Ruby, is it?” Pearl narrowed her eyes, her gaze sharp and perceptive.

Even Sylas, who was afraid of nothing and no one, faltered under her scrutiny. He grinned sheepishly, rubbing his nose. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Mrs. Steele. Let’s see what happens first.”

But his embarrassment said enough. Pearl studied him for a moment longer, her satisfaction growing. The Cunningham boy had been the talk of the Capital since he was little—brilliant, handsome, the whole package. If anyone was worthy of their daughter, it was him.

She finally looked away, already making mental calculations and feeling increasingly content.

At that moment, Ruby frowned, her eyes lingering on Gennifer as she weighed the truth in her words.
