“But why is it okay to give it to Ruby?”
Frieda glared stubbornly at the old woman. “I don’t agree with this!”
For once, the old matriarch’s face darkened.
Whoever held the reins of the Steele family would be blessed with unimaginable wealth and unrivaled influence. Anyone granted such an honor would be delirious with joy, and those close to them would bask in that glory.
Yet, this was the first time she had ever seen a mother object to her own daughter inheriting it.
She used to think Frieda was simply blinded by confusion, but now it seemed she was hopelessly lost.
“The bracelet is mine. I’ll give it to whoever I please. Who are you to disagree?” the old woman snapped, her gaze fierce and commanding as she stared Ruby down.
Even Ruby found herself rattled by the intensity of her presence.
“Mrs. Grayson, don’t forget—you left the Steele family over twenty years ago. Whatever happens here is no longer your concern,” Pearl said coldly, her voice sharp as ice.
As Ruby listened to them argue, she glanced down at the bracelet on her wrist. Could it be… that this wasn’t just the simple piece of jewelry the old woman claimed? If not, why would Frieda react so strongly?
If that really were the case, she had even more reason to refuse it.
The old woman watched Hanley and Frieda’s every move, her eyes occasionally flicking toward Ruby to gauge her reaction. The moment she sensed Ruby might try to slip off the bracelet, she reached over and covered Ruby’s hand with her own.
Ruby looked up, meeting the old woman’s steady, determined eyes.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly and mouthed, “Don’t take it off.”
Ruby hesitated, her hand frozen, then let it fall quietly to her side.
Even if she was technically part of the Steele family, even if they shared blood, she’d only just met them a few times. There was no way she could accept something so valuable, so deeply meaningful. Still, given the scene playing out in front of her, she couldn’t take it off right now. Once she left the Grayson estate, she’d find a way to return it.
She resolved as much in her heart.
Frieda tried to protest, but Pearl’s words silenced her. She was clearly unhappy, but there was nothing she could do—Pearl was right. Frieda had long since separated from the Steele family; she had no standing to interfere in who inherited what.
