Sylas’s eyes went wide, and he blinked at Ruby with a wounded expression. But one look at her raised eyebrow and he deflated. “I won’t say anything…”
“You’re still going upstairs. You just got out of the hospital; you need to rest.” Her tone was firm, leaving no room for argument. “Pamela, please show him to a room. I’ll take Mira.”
Ruby took the baby, inhaling the soft, milky scent of her skin. Mira blinked up at her, melting her heart.
“Mr. Cunningham, this way please,” Pamela said, gesturing for Sylas to follow.
With Ruby’s eyes on him, Sylas had no choice but to trudge upstairs. As soon as he was gone, the three women turned to each other, a new topic of conversation already forming.

At the Veyne Private Medical Center, Gennifer was curled up in Frieda’s arms, tears streaming down her face. “Mom… you said you would help me. But Great-aunt, Grand-uncle, and Aunt Pearl… they seem to hate me.”
Frieda’s heart ached. “They’ve just been misled by Ruby,” she cooed, gently wiping away the tears.
“So does that mean the Steele family will never accept me?” Gennifer asked, her voice trembling.
Frieda, though unsettled by the day’s events, forced a reassuring tone. “Of course not. Your great-aunt and great-uncle are all bark and no bite. They forced me to leave the family, but they still came to see me, didn’t they? It will be the same with you.”
Gennifer seemed somewhat comforted. “Really?”
“Of course. When have I ever lied to you?”
