Gennifer was so excited to hear you were coming back that she checked herself out of the hospital right away. I’m going to cook a special dinner to celebrate our family being reunited.”

“Ruby?” Frieda prompted when she was met with silence, a hint of irritation creeping into her voice. Hanley shot her a warning look, and she quickly forced the sweetness back. “My child, I neglected you when you were young, and we’ve been estranged for so long. Please, give your mother a chance to make amends.”

Hayley, who was also listening, mouthed dramatically, *A chance to make amends? Ooooh.* She made a great, theatrical ‘O’ with her lips, her eyes wide with sarcasm. Fanny just shook her head but didn’t stop her. She felt the same way.

The unexpected agreement stunned Frieda into silence. She looked at Hanley, who nodded eagerly.

“Wonderful! Then come over tonight. I’ll be waiting for you, darling,” Frieda gushed, rushing the words out before Ruby could change her mind.
