"Your father is a bastard!"
She spat the words through gritted teeth, her tone vicious, but a moment later, tears streamed down her face.
Hanley Grayson was oblivious to Violet's breakdown. He returned to Grayson Manor just before dawn.
Frieda Steele, looking dazed, had woken up early and immediately spotted Hanley sitting on the sofa.
She froze, wondering for a second if she was imagining things.
"Hanley?"
She whispered his name, and only when he slowly turned to look at her did she rush forward and throw herself into his arms. "I'm sorry, Hanley. I misunderstood you. Please, forgive me, won't you?"
She sobbed out her apology, then looked up from his embrace, her eyes filled with pleading.
"Hanley, I can't live without you…"
She hiccupped, gazing up at his stern, unsmiling face, her heart pounding with fear and panic.
After a long moment, she felt a hand gently tighten on her arm.
Frieda looked up in surprise and saw Hanley finally looking down at her.
"Frieda, I know you've been under a lot of stress lately. But you shouldn't have doubted me, no matter what. So many people used to say I was only after you for your family's status, but you left the Steele family for me. All these years, I've never forgotten your sacrifice. I've worked tirelessly to make sure you could continue to live a carefree life as a wealthy woman. How could you not trust me?"
His fingertips tightened, his eyes full of disappointment as he looked at her.
"Hanley!"
Frieda's heart clenched, but she sensed a shift in his tone.
She hugged him tighter, shaking her head vigorously. "I won't. I'll never doubt you again!"
Just as her heart began to sink from the lack of an immediate response, a resigned sigh finally came from above her.
"Alright." Hanley helped her sit on his lap. "I don't know what to do with you."
