Heh.
Lunatic, huh?
Ruby's eyes flickered for a moment, then dulled, going hollow and shadowed once more.
Apart from the faint, mocking curve of her lips, she showed no reaction at all. It was as if she hadn't just been slapped, as if Cassian hadn't just stepped in on her behalf.
The looming figure above her suddenly retreated. Then, her wrist was seized again.
This time, Cassian gripped her so hard she thought he might snap her bones—clearly worried she'd break free once more.
She tugged twice, but his hold didn't budge. Gritting her teeth, Ruby met Cassian's cold, venomous gaze.
His eyes lingered on the red mark blooming across her cheek.
But when he finally spoke, his words were:
"Go apologize to Gennifer."
His voice was low and rich, almost pleasant—if not for the sheer cruelty and coldness lacing every syllable.
Apologize to Gennifer.
Those three words echoed in her mind. Ruby let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "Not a chance."
"I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize? She's the one who hit me!"
"Just because you're Cassian, you think you can twist right and wrong and make me apologize to her?"
It was two against one, and still they expected her to say sorry? Especially when it was Gennifer who started it!
Ruby didn't bother hiding her scorn. The icy defiance in her posture only made Cassian's eyes grow darker, colder.
Gennifer, simmering with frustration, gave Cassian's sleeve a pitiful little tug.
"Cassian, you have to stand up for me," she pleaded, her voice trembling with practiced innocence. "She tried to hit me first, and now she won't even apologize. Clearly, spending over a year in prison hasn't taught her anything. With that cold and twisted personality, it's no wonder she betrayed you all those years ago."
At her words, Cassian's gaze turned glacial, so cold it felt like it could slice right through Ruby.
Ruby stared back, her fists clenched so tightly at her side that her knuckles blanched.
Her eyes bored into Gennifer until the other woman finally looked away, flustered and guilty.
"Oh, should I be thanking you both for sending me to prison?" Ruby spat, her voice razor-sharp.
Cassian actually flinched, and, for reasons even he seemed not to understand, his grip loosened and he let her go.
Ruby took the chance to step back, then turned and headed for the stairs.
Bang.
The sound of her bedroom door slamming echoed through the silent house, sharp and angry—a sound that seemed to carry all the bitterness and injustice of her years behind bars.
Gennifer darted a nervous glance at Cassian.
He stood motionless, his face unreadable, his dark eyes still fixed on Ruby's door as if he could see right through it. For a moment, he looked utterly lost.
The whole house was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.
