Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 64

As soon as Ruby looked up, she realized the big, fluffy dog that had been bouncing around moments ago had vanished into thin air.

In its place stood Cameron Lockridge, now dressed in a crisp white shirt, his hair clearly tamed and freshly styled.

Ruby couldn't help but twitch the corner of her mouth. That was… remarkably fast.

"You…" she began, half amused, half exasperated.

Catching the teasing tone in her voice, Cameron's ears, which had just cooled from embarrassment, instantly flushed red again, the color this time climbing all the way to the tips. With his hair neatly swept aside, there was nothing to hide it—it was painfully obvious.

Ruby noticed at once and pressed her lips together, stifling a smile.

It seemed Cameron actually cared quite a bit about how he looked in front of her. Then again, she supposed it made sense. After all, she was just a guest he'd taken in out of kindness—a stranger, really. Who wants to let their guard down completely in front of someone they barely know?

She talked herself through these thoughts and, out of consideration, didn't linger on his appearance or make it awkward for him.

But as she glanced away, she missed the fleeting shadow that passed through Cameron's eyes.

"Ruby, you're looking for the divorce papers?" he asked, having pulled himself together.

"That's right." She nodded.

At her answer, an odd look flickered across Cameron's face.

Ruby frowned. "What's wrong?"

"Did you not find them on your nightstand? I left them in your room last time…"

Ruby's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Really?"

An awkward silence fell between them—until Mira's wailing from the other room shattered it.

Ruby snapped back to reality, gently soothing Mira and preparing a bottle. Meanwhile, Cameron—with Ruby's permission—searched her room from top to bottom.

He found nothing.

Cameron emerged from the bedroom, brows furrowed, and exchanged a look with Ruby, who was now cradling Mira on the couch.

He scratched his head, sheepishly confessing everything he'd done.

Listening to him recount the story, Ruby couldn't help but feel a flicker of admiration. Wasn't he still working at Veyne & Co.? Had it not occurred to him what would happen if anyone found out?

She voiced the question.

Cameron was quiet for a moment, then shook his head honestly. "I just wanted to help you, Ruby. I didn't really think much further than that."

His words left her momentarily speechless.

A gentle warmth welled up in Ruby's chest—she was genuinely touched.

If Cassian really had signed the papers, she could finally start the divorce process.

But now, the papers were missing… again.

After a long pause, Ruby sighed. "It's alright. I'll just print a couple more copies. Thank you, though."

She smiled softly. Cameron stared at her, momentarily dazed, his heart pounding.

For a second, something strange and electric seemed to hang in the air between them.

Once Mira finished her bottle, Ruby put her down and headed off to print the documents herself.

Cameron sat nearby, finding himself in a staring contest with baby Mira. She was perfectly content, hardly needing any attention, though she did reach out to tug at his hair and poke his face, making Cameron freeze in place, unsure how to react.

Eventually, though, his gaze drifted across the room, landing on Ruby as she waited by the printer—a quietly elegant silhouette.

His eyes softened, the heat in his chest cooling into a quiet, unspoken sadness.

He hadn't managed to help her after all.
