Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 69

When the door opened, Cameron Lockridge stood outside, looking just as drawn and exhausted as Ruby felt.

He managed a crooked smile. "I've got to head into the office. Might be a long day. If you need anything, call me, all right?"

He waved his phone in the air, pretending everything was fine.

Ruby's heart was heavy with guilt, but the dazzling smile on his face made the words catch in her throat. All she could do was nod, perhaps a little too vigorously.

Once Cameron left, Ruby tiptoed out of the bedroom and paused by the couch in the living room. There, sitting where she'd left it yesterday, was the divorce agreement she'd brought to Veyne & Co.—to no avail.

They'd told her Cassian wasn't in, but barely a moment later, Cameron was called back to the office and shoved a breach-of-contract notice.

Ruby clenched her fists, anxiety twisting inside her.

Cassian, what are you really trying to do?

Top floor, Veyne & Co.

Cassian sat at his desk, flipping through documents with an air of boredom. His cold, sharp gaze flicked upward.

"Mr. Veyne, Attorney Lockridge is, after all, one of our brightest lawyers—the kind who could go toe-to-toe with Gennifer..." Bennett's tone was careful, his eyes darting to Cassian as he relayed the shareholders' concerns.

Cassian gave a mirthless laugh, his gaze icy. "What, are you saying that without Cameron Lockridge, Veyne & Co. is finished?"

A chill ran down Bennett's spine and he shook his head quickly.

Losing one attorney wasn't the end of the world, but Bennett could see what Mr. Veyne was doing—trying to win his wife back. Was this really the right way to do it?

He lowered his head, silently willing himself to blend into the background.

Bennett couldn't help recalling the plan Cassian had set into motion, feeling a wave of unease.

Attorney Lockridge had taken Ruby in—and that had clearly infuriated Cassian.

Lockridge was a rising star in the legal world, but now, it seemed his career might be cut tragically short.

To win his wife back, Mr. Veyne was pulling out all the stops.

"Mr. Veyne, Attorney Lockridge is here."
