Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 75

Ruby jumped, startled, and spun around. The moment she recognized who it was, a chill shot down her spine.

Cassian's assistant stood a few paces away, giving her a curt nod.

"You need to apologize to Miss Grayson."

His voice was low and steady, but Ruby felt as if she'd been plunged into an icy lake.

Why was Cassian's assistant here?

Why, when Cameron Lockridge was lying in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, was Cassian's assistant waiting here to force her to apologize to Gennifer?

As the two facts collided in her mind, Ruby's face drained of color.

"It was you, wasn't it?"

Her voice shot up, trembling with panic and accusation, carrying a desperate edge.

Bennett pressed his lips into a thin line, silent, repeating mechanically as if wound up with a key: "Ma'am, please go and apologize to Miss Grayson."

Ruby staggered back two steps, staring at Bennett as though he were some kind of monster.

Suddenly, her dazed shock shattered into frantic clarity. She spun around, searching the corridor like a trapped animal, her eyes wild. "Where is he? If you're here, he must be close. Why won't he show himself? Why won't he face me?!"

Her eyes were bloodshot, and when she found no sign of Cassian, she glared at Bennett with a hatred that burned.

She had thought Cameron Lockridge had been forced to go along with the drinking out of financial desperation, but now—

"I'll make you listen."

That deep, hoarse voice echoed in her mind, making her chest seize so tightly it hurt.

Cassian.

It was him.

She screamed his name inside her head, her arms shaking with rage.

No wonder. No wonder…

He'd used Cameron Lockridge's life to teach her a lesson.

Grief twisted itself into bitter laughter. Ruby let out a hollow chuckle, but tears streaked down her face.

To force her into apologizing to Gennifer, he'd stooped to something so cruel and vile.

"Something like this… Mr. Veyne doesn't need to handle it himself."

The implication was clear: neither Cameron Lockridge nor Ruby herself was worth Cassian's personal attention.

Ruby's eyes and hands trembled with fury.
