Gennifer was quick to recover, her smile deepening with a touch of mischief. "You know, sis, Mom always taught us that if you're going to apologize—at least make it sincere."

Ruby lifted her gaze, eyes narrowing in suspicion. "And what exactly do you want?"

"Well, you are my sister. Sure, you hit me, but I'm not petty enough to just hit back and call it even." Gennifer's eyes flashed cold for a split second, recalling the humiliation of that day.

"Let's do it this way." She turned, lowered herself slightly, and leaned in, voice barely above a whisper. "You kneel in the lobby of Veyne & Co. for two hours. Do that, and I'll forgive you."

As soon as the words left her lips, Gennifer straightened and folded her arms, looking as composed as ever, as if she hadn't just demanded something so cruel.

Ruby's pupils constricted; she stared at Gennifer as if she'd just seen a snake.

The onlookers, drawn by the commotion, were equally stunned. No one had expected Miss Gennifer to be so vicious.

"What's the matter? Not willing?" Gennifer's voice dropped, now laced with mockery.

"I heard that the ever-so-proud Attorney Lockridge has done all sorts of things for you—drinking himself sick at those endless business mixers, even putting his apartment up for auction. But I guess kneeling for a couple of hours is too much for you to handle, huh?"

She gave a soft, taunting laugh, each word tightening the pressure on Ruby.

"Miss Gennifer—" someone started, but Gennifer raised a hand to cut them off. "Cassian asked my sister to come here and seek my forgiveness. You all want to interfere?"

She smiled sweetly, the very picture of warmth—except for the sharp warning glinting in her eyes.

At that, the others fell silent, glancing at Ruby with a mix of pity and discomfort.
