Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 8

For some reason, even though everything looked the same, it all felt different.

"She brought it on herself," Cassian said coldly. "Gennifer Grayson, remember a year and a half ago? You crushed the Blackwood family's star attorney with your brilliant legal brief during that finance case. You're a prodigy in the courtroom. With you, Grayson & Co. is unstoppable."

He paused, setting aside his coffee to unscrew a bottle of water. Only after taking a long drink did the tight line of his brow ease, though the corners of his lips twisted with scorn.

"As for her…" He let the words hang in the air, his watch glinting icily under the lights. "She's just an ex-con. Not worth your attention."

The expensive timepiece on his wrist caught the light, a cold gleam flickering across his face. When he finished speaking, his lips pressed even tighter.

"But Ruby was my mentor," Gennifer sighed, the words heavy with worry. "She was the one who brought me into Grayson & Co. as a junior associate all those years ago."

Cassian's eyes narrowed. "If not for her, would you have been stuck at entry level for so long? She was jealous of your talent, Gennifer. She stole your hard-earned defense and used it to skyrocket her own career."

"She's always been vicious, and you—too kind for your own good."

Cassian gave Gennifer a gentle smile, though his eyes brimmed with contempt and disgust for the woman from their past. Gennifer let out a quiet breath of relief, her shoulders relaxing.

Almost absentmindedly, she murmured, "Who could've guessed Ruby would sell out the firm? She knew the Blackwood family was your sworn enemy, and yet she tried to conspire with them, forcing you to rely on her—"

As she spoke, Gennifer clasped Cassian's knee, as if recalling a close call.

"Thank God you were here."

Cassian patted her hand absentmindedly, his thoughts drifting far away.

That woman—where was she now? Wasn't she always obsessed with being Mrs. Grayson? She hadn't come home at all last night. Had she really spent the night out on the streets, digging for scraps in a trash can?

Or was she scheming, planning another move?
