Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 93

Cassian stared at the man's face, a wave of inexplicable frustration and agitation surging in his chest.

"Well? Out with it. What do you want?"

Turning away, he spoke with an icy, clipped tone.

"This."

Cameron Lockridge handed over a crumpled document, its corners bent from being squeezed too tightly.

Cassian's brows drew together in annoyance. He looked like he was about to make a cutting remark, but before he could say a word, Cameron Lockridge abruptly stood up. "You'll regret this."

Without waiting for a response, he staggered out of the room.

Bennett's gaze followed Cameron's retreating figure, worried he might trip over his own feet and land flat on his face.

Cassian, meanwhile, was even more irritated by Cameron's parting words, which seemed to come out of nowhere.

Regret? What could he possibly have to regret?

Still, despite his own dismissive thoughts, Cassian's eyes drifted down to the battered old document left on the table.

He picked it up, almost begrudgingly, and flipped open the first page. At first he barely glanced at it, but as he read, his gaze sharpened, growing colder, more intense.

By the time he reached the last page, his fingertips were trembling.

He quickly turned to the end—only to realize the file was incomplete. Just fragments.

How was this possible?

Cassian was speechless, as if something was lodged in his throat, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

"Mr. Veyne?" Bennett's concerned voice broke through Cassian's shock, sensing a sudden, violent shift in his mood.

Cassian came back to himself, heart still pounding out of control. He shoved the file into Bennett's hands.

"Keep this safe. Don't let it out of your sight." His voice was sharp, his jaw tight. Bennett instantly straightened, his own expression turning serious.

Cameron Lockridge hadn't left completely; instead, he paused at the entrance of the hotel, casting one last, lingering look back at Cassian, whose face kept shifting with emotion. Only then did Cameron finally turn and disappear into the darkness.

He'd said Cassian would regret it.

Cameron released a heavy breath; the heat in his chest made him feel even more stifled. The streetlight stretched his swaying shadow, making him look even more lost and forlorn as he walked away.

With Cameron gone, Bennett hurried off to find Ruby as ordered. He soon returned, guiding Cassian a few steps forward, where they discovered Ruby slumped over a table, half-conscious.

She lay face-down, utterly drained, yet her arms were wrapped tightly around Mira.

Mira, eyes wide and dark as ripe berries, let out anxious little sounds. Usually, the smallest whimper from her would send Ruby into a fit of worry, but now, Ruby barely reacted.

A sudden pang of worry shot through Cassian. He moved closer, reaching out to touch her forehead. Even from a short distance, he could feel the heat radiating from her body.

He straightened, startled, then forced himself to stay calm as he gently brushed her hair aside.

Her cheeks were flushed, lips parted and rosy, her expression oddly alluring. Cassian narrowed his eyes, and in a flash, he remembered the night they'd shared a year ago.

His gaze hardened.

"Get a presidential suite. Now."

His voice was low and commanding. In one swift motion, he scooped Ruby up in his arms.

Bennett stared in shock, then, reading the situation on Ruby's face, quickly rushed to carry out the order.
