"Used me?"
Ruby's brows knit together, immediately catching the odd turn in his words.
Cassian's own brow arched. He dragged a plush chair over with little ceremony and sprawled into it like he owned the place.
The man's presence was overwhelming—suddenly, the small room felt even more suffocating.
"You've been drugged."
He leaned his elbow on the armrest, studying Ruby's face with a lazy, almost amused look.
Sure enough, the moment those words landed, Ruby's expression flickered—her lips twisted with a rigid, incredulous twitch.
"A–an aphrodisiac?" she whispered, barely believing it, then shot him a sharp look. "Then how did you—"
She cut herself off, the words dying on her tongue.
"How else do you think it's handled?"
Cassian let out a humorless chuckle, tugging idly at his collar.
Only then did Ruby notice the way his shirt hung open at the neck, and the implication nearly made her faint all over again.
Seeing the stricken look on her face, Cassian's eyes darkened, unreadable.
He said coldly, "I called in a private physician from Veyne & Co."
At that, Ruby visibly relaxed, relief washing over her features.
But that single gesture made Cassian's eyes narrow, danger flickering in his gaze.
"Ruby, do you need me to remind you? We're legally married. Even if I did…"
"—It would hardly be out of line!" he snapped, words suddenly edged and sharp as knives.
"Do you need me to remind you?" Ruby shot back, spine ramrod straight. "The divorce papers have been ready for ages. All that's left is your signature!"
Cassian faltered, staring at the woman before him as if she were someone he'd never met.
He rubbed at his brow and looked away, voice tight. "Ruby, if you keep playing these games, I'll get tired of them soon enough."
He tried to keep his tone light, but Ruby easily heard the threat beneath it.
"You know perfectly well I'm not joking."
She gave a cold, dismissive laugh, ignoring the thundercloud gathering on Cassian's face.
