Burn Me Once Burn With Me (Ruby Grayson) novel Chapter 97

Ruby didn't dare let her mind go any further.

Meanwhile, at a newsstand just outside the hotel, a woman sat behind drawn curtains. Most of her face was hidden by oversized sunglasses, but the twisted fury in her expression was impossible to disguise.

Why?!

Why was Ruby always so lucky?

Gennifer yanked off her sunglasses, her eyes cold and venomous. Her nails dug sharply into her palms, drawing pinpricks of pain—pain she barely noticed.

She had planned everything so perfectly. Once she drugged Ruby, she'd make sure Cameron Lockridge found her in a compromising position. Cassian would just happen to walk in at the right moment… Catching them together would leave no room for doubt. The divorce papers would practically sign themselves.

Gennifer kept her gaze fixed on the window with the curtains pulled tight.

Why had Cassian gotten there first?!

Her hand shook. She didn't even want to imagine what might've happened in those minutes she'd lost sight of them.

"Cassian."

Gennifer dialed his number, her tone careful and cautious.

Cassian picked up, immediately sensing the tension. He frowned. "What is it?"

The calm steadiness in his voice gave Gennifer a flicker of comfort. Maybe… nothing had happened after all?

"N-nothing," she stammered, forcing her voice into a syrupy register, "I just…missed you."

She tried to sound sweet, teasingly affectionate.

Cassian pulled his phone away with a frown. "I'm working. If it's not about work, don't call."

With that, he hung up, leaving no room for argument.

Up front, Bennett, who was driving, glanced back in surprise. Mr. Veyne had always indulged Miss Gennifer, admiring her talent and rarely speaking harshly to her. This was a first.
