Chapter 49
This was weird for someone like Killian to join the part where he would be sent to a war, and probably died.
Therefore, two days later, Killian was summoned to the palace, and Maximus talked to him personally. He didn’t meet him in the throne room, but both of them met in the training ground, where there was no one
around.
“So, what is your motive?” Maximus didn’t beat around the bush, he wanted to get down with this as soon as possible, since he didn’t think he could stay a little bit longer from Rania. Fuck. He craved for her.
“I don’t have any motive. I only want to be part of the victory of this kingdom,” Killian replied, his answer was very smooth. He didn’t even stutter, as he stood ten steps away from the king.
Someone with the privilege like Killian rarely cared about the war. They had a good life in their pack, as a respected former beta’s son, therefore, why would ruffle such convenience life?
Maximus stated as much, but Killian was unfazed with his answer.
“I think you have already learned that former beta Alaric is not my real father. I am his stepson, no matter how good I am, I will never meet with his expectation, because I am not blood related to him.”
Killian tilted his head, and gave the king a harmless smile.
“Don’t get me wrong, my king. He didn’t treat me bad. But, the blood that runs in my veins is not his, and there is nothing I can do to change that.”
Maximus listened to him, but he didn’t comment anything, instead, he talked about another topic entirely. The king walked toward Killian, his eyes fixed on him.
“Tell me why all of you treated Rania badly.”
Killian then rehashed the same thing that Maximus had already known, which made him look disappointed, because this was what he expected.
Eiten might not catch up with it, but he had survived by lying, thus he knew how it worked. It didn’t sound genuine at all, or even believable in that matter, but he didn’t say anything about it, and then talked about something else.
After a few short conversations, Maximus allowed Killian to enter the palace early, and trained with the other
warrior.
Just like what a wise man said. Kept your friend close, but your enemy closer. And that was what Maximus was doing.
Later that night, he finally gave in, and then visited Rania’s bedroom, where she was watching a television, which displayed her favorite cartoon. She didn’t watch anything else, but this one.
She was too engrossed, to the point she didn’t even realize that Maximus was standing behind her. The king watched the way she was chuckling lightly. The genuine smile on her lips, and wondered why she couldn’t show it to him.

The bandage on her wound had been taken off, but you could see a small linear scar on her neck. It was even more visible under the light. It was like a white thread against her skin. You wouldn’t notice that, unless you looked it closely.
Somehow, Maximus had the urge to touch her scar, telling her how sorry he was, that he didn’t mean to hurt
her.
And before his mind could process, his hand had touched her neck, which made her jump in surprise. The smile on her lips faded away, and her eyes filled with fear when she saw the king was there.
She opened her mouth, but she didn’t say anything.
“You can do whatever you want. He chose to join.” If Rania could be honest, she wanted to tell Maximus to send him to the frontline right away, with a silver bracelet, so he wouldn’t be able to shift during the battle. It would be great.

But, of course, all of those horrendous thoughts were only in her mind. Rania kept her head down, and stared. at the meat that she wanted to throw away.
Lula had been trying to help with her taste buds, but it didn’t show any progress, and she was fine with it. She had long felt there was no need for her to taste anything. There was nothing special. She ate because she didn’t want to be starved.
Meanwhile, Maximus didn’t even touch his food. He went to the bathroom for a while, and Rania used that opportunity to put a single drop of poison on his drink.
Yet, until they were done, Maximus didn’t drink, and didn’t eat, which made Rania wonder why he brought her here in the first place if he didn’t want to eat. What a waste of poison…
And the car ride back to the palace was filled with the awkward silence. The king acted weird as well, because he didn’t say anything, but the tension between them built up, once they were inside the room.
Rania immediately knew, how this night would end. The king wanted her. He dined her, and now he wanted to get his portion.
Would it make it her feel better when he let his intention known? Rania couldn’t tell for sure.
However, when he hugged her from behind, Rania’s mind went to the poison in her front pocket. “I….. I need to get to the bathroom.”
She fled from his embrace before he could react, and then locked the door behind her. She stood behind the door, and took out the poison.
By this time, Maximus must think she didn’t want it, but then Rania drank the poison, but she didn’t swallow it and then walked out and kissed the king.
