Outside the Stonehill Police Department, Wiona sat quietly in her car. As soon as Nicholas hurried out the front doors, he spotted her and walked over.
“Wiona, what brings you here?” he asked, sounding both surprised and concerned. “Was that guy, Korey, and the legal team with him sent by you?”
Wiona got out of the car right away. “Uncle Nicholas, how’s Bronwen? Yes, Korey’s here for this. He’s handling everything, you can trust him.”
Nicholas nodded, looking a little relieved. “We know a few lawyers, but those people Korey brought today are on another level. They’re talking things out with the police as we speak. Browen just got caught up in all this by accident. Taylor left a note before… well, saying your mentor and some others forced him into a corner. But there’s no real evidence, so she should be fine.”
Wiona let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. “That’s good. I was worried. It’s my fault she got dragged into this in the first place. Uncle Nicholas, do you know what happened with Taylor? Why would he… do something like that?”
Nicholas shook his head and sighed. “I did some digging. It all started when Mr. Sullivan from Sullivan Group posted one of Taylor’s paintings online. At first, no one really cared about the painting itself. They were more interested that Mr. Sullivan posted anything at all, since he almost never shows up on social media. But soon enough, someone pointed out that the painting was from Taylor’s competition with W a year ago. That painting was the reason Taylor won and W dropped out of the art world. People swarmed to see it, but when they really looked, things started to unravel. A bunch of experts online said the painting didn’t look like Taylor’s style at all. Internet detectives started comparing every detail. Before long, professionals concluded that Taylor had cheated. That painting wasn’t his. It belonged to his mentor.”
Nicholas paused, then continued, “Then, Mr. Sullivan posted your tiger painting. Wiona, do you get what it means for him to post two times in one day? The whole internet exploded. People started guessing what he was up to, saying maybe he realized something was off and wanted justice. That’s when I found out Mr. Sullivan was the one who bought your painting. Looks like he’s a loyal fan, coming to your defense and trying to stand up for you.”
Nicholas watched Wiona with a new sense of pride, like he was finally seeing her luck turn.
Wiona felt a little embarrassed. “I wouldn’t go that far. Mr. Sullivan and I do have some history… with art, I mean.”
