“No, I don’t want to see her.” Wiona’s voice was firm as she narrowed her eyes. “I want to let her out.”

She made it back to Hawthorne Hall just before the sky faded to night. Alice was waiting for her, practically bouncing with excitement. She didn’t even bother with dinner. Instead, she grabbed her art supplies and ran over, calling out, “Wiona, let’s paint! Let’s do the stars and the moon tonight!”

Wiona’s stomach was growling, but she couldn’t say no. Alice’s joy was contagious, so she let herself be dragged outside. Still, as she watched Alice, she felt a wave of guilt. She’d been hired for this job, but she’d skipped work for days. It didn’t sit right with her.

She decided she wouldn’t count these days toward her contract. If Conrad was okay with it, she’d make up for it later and really focus on helping Alice, just as soon as her own matters were sorted out.

Alice, still full of energy, kept counting the stars above, her voice soft in the quiet night. Wiona slept soundly beside her, her breathing steady and peaceful.

When Conrad came home, he saw his little sister spinning around, giggling, and Wiona curled up asleep, smaller and even younger-looking than Alice.

“Conrad!” Alice shouted, running straight into his arms.

He hugged her, ruffling her hair. “So, what did you do today?”

Alice ticked off her day on her fingers, carefully recounting everything. At the end, she grinned. “Wiona came back! We waited for you so we could all eat dinner together.”

Conrad smiled at her. “Alice, you can start without me. I’m gonna carry Wiona upstairs so she can sleep a bit more.”

Alice didn’t sound thrilled, but seeing how deeply Wiona was sleeping, she finally nodded. “Okay.”

Conrad’s eyes softened. “You are such a nice girl, Alice.”

Once Alice was settled, Conrad crossed over and scooped Wiona up in his arms.
