“Alona, why didn’t I just finish you off?”
Alona just laughed, sharp and wild. “She’s dead? Deanna is really dead? That’s perfect. Serves her right.”
She finally dropped the mask. All that hatred, all that anger, was right there on her face. She glared at Isaac, who was still just standing off to the side, then at Daniel. Slowly, she pushed herself up from the floor, looking almost possessed.
“So what, Daniel? Just because you want me gone, I’m supposed to disappear? You want to chase me out of my own life because you found your soulmate?” Her voice was cold, furious. “And what about you, Daniel? Are you really that innocent? Are you going to stand there and pretend you weren’t already cheating on me when you fell for her?”
She scoffed. “As long as I’m still your wife, Deanna is nothing but the other woman. She’ll always be the one you have to hide.” Her voice cracked, just a little. “All these years, and I could never get close to your heart. But you just handed it to her, like it was nothing. Daniel, you’re the one I hate most in this world.”
She turned on Isaac. “And you, Isaac. Don’t think showing up now means you get to take everything!”
Alona took a shaky breath, her face set. “So what if the truth is out? Jace is your real son, Daniel. Are you going to call him someone else’s bastard now, just to protect your precious secret child? I hope you’re ready, because if I have to suffer, so do you.”
She grabbed Bianca’s arm and tried to leave. But Bianca pulled away, sobbing and shaking her head. “No, I’m Dad’s daughter. I belong to this family. I’m not bastard, I’m not!”
Alona rounded on her, slapping her hard. “What do you want from me? Didn’t you hear your wonderful father? He keeps calling you a bastard. If you stay, you’ll never get any love from him. Let’s go!”
Dragging Bianca along, Alona stormed out. Blood started to seep through her hospital gown, her wound splitting open from the struggle. She held her stomach, stumbling out in pain, leaving the whole room in stunned silence.
Grandma Grace’s gaze settled on Isaac. “You… Are you really Daniel’s son?”
She already knew the answer, just from looking at him.
Isaac glanced at Daniel, who gave a tiny nod. Then, he stepped forward and gently took Grandma Grace’s hand. “Grandma, my name is Isaac.”
