The second Wiona slid into the car, she shut her eyes and pretended to sleep. She had zero interest in talking to Jace. He glanced over and noticed the gentle curve of her belly, something about it softening his mood.
“How was your last checkup? Are the babies okay?”
Wiona didn’t even flinch.
Jace sighed and reached over, brushing her hair lightly. “I know last night was rough for you, but Grandma already made apologize. Can we just call it even and let it go?”
In her head, Wiona scoffed. He thought he could just declare things even, like it was that simple? Sorry, but she was born stubborn and never forgot a slight. She stayed silent.
Other than for Kellen, Jace had never lowered himself to this level for anyone. His face tightened with annoyance. Suddenly, he pulled the car over to the side of the road.
“Wiona, are you ever going to stop with this?” he snapped, grabbing her shoulders and turning her to face him. “I’m talking to you. Even a deaf person would react somehow.”
Wiona opened her eyes, cold and unblinking. “You said you wanted to explain about Kellen, didn’t you? Go ahead. And you still owe me an answer about the tea set. I’m waiting.”
Jace clenched his jaw. “So you’re not letting this go, huh?”
She actually laughed. It was true—sometimes you could only laugh when words failed you. He was the one who wanted to explain, but now he started to accuse her of making a scene. No matter what, he was always right. She was just supposed to take it, play the role of his perfect wife, no complaints.
She stared him down, so relentless that he finally looked away first.
“Wiona, I’m making Kellen my secretary at the company. I admit, I should’ve told you beforehand,” he said, his tone stiff. “But you owe her. If you hadn’t pulled those tricks back then, she wouldn’t have been sent abroad. She suffered so much, all alone in a different country. You broke us up. I’m just giving her a job now. If you can’t even handle that, you are just too petty. And about the tea set, I already told you—Kellen had no idea it was yours. I’ll buy you as many as you want, okay? Can we stop fighting? I’m seriously tired.”
Of course he was tired, Wiona thought, trying to juggle two women would drain anyone. But she never wanted him to please her. He was the one putting on this “good husband” act. Tired? He had no one but himself to blame.
“I’ll only say this once, Jace.” Her voice was icy. “When the Morgans and Salisburys arranged our marriage, I didn’t say yes because of you. By the time I agreed, I already heard your girlfriend had left the country. What tricks did I supposedly use to force her away? Go on, tell me. I’d love to hear it.”
It was the first time Jace had heard her say any of this. Seeing how certain she was, he pressed down the cold doubt rising inside him. Could he have misunderstood what happened with Kellen all those years ago?
