After Isaac finished speaking, he didn’t bother to look at Kellen’s pale and anxious face. He just turned and walked away with long strides.
Once she left the hospital, Wiona called Florian. Strangely, he didn’t answer. She hadn’t reached out to him recently, but this sudden silence felt off. This wasn’t like him at all. Wiona shot Mason a quick text: [Try getting in touch with Florian.] She wasn’t really worried about him, but something felt weird. Plus, she still needed Florian to keep an eye on things for her.
She put away her phone and glanced at Summer, who sat quietly beside her as they followed the ambulance to the nursing home. The car was quiet, so Wiona took the chance to ask, “Summer, what do you know about Wilson? Can you tell me anything?”
Summer had been thinking about Wilson too, so she jumped right in. “He’s always been known for his looks. Super handsome. But honestly, I don’t really remember what he did for work before. I heard he’s teaching art at Stonehill College now, but I could’ve sworn he doesn’t even know how to paint. It’s just weird… Oh, but one thing stands out. Ever since I was a kid, I knew Bronwen was crazy about him. Like, really obsessed. She even humbled herself just to get his love. It was a big deal—my mom talked about it all the time when I was little.”
Wiona was surprised. Bronwen, obsessed with Wilson? That didn’t match what she remembered. Every time she visited their house, Bronwen and Wilson never seemed happy together. In fact, Wiona always thought their relationship was kind of cold. But today at the hospital, they actually looked like a loving couple. Was she remembering things wrong?
After dropping off Summer and her father at the nursing home, Cassian still wasn’t showing any signs of waking up. The nurse said, “Let’s wait another hour and see what happens. You should talk to him. Hearing familiar voices keeps patients from falling into too deep a sleep. It helps them wake up faster.”
Summer immediately started talking to her dad. Wiona checked the time. If she stayed any longer, she’d miss dinner at Hawthorne Hall. Today was the day she and Conrad got their marriage license. She really didn’t want to stand him up on their first day as a married couple. Thinking of this, she walked over to Summer and said goodbye. “Summer, is it okay if I come visit your dad tomorrow? I have something I need to take care of tonight.”
Summer glanced at Wiona’s belly, then quickly stood to walk her to the door. “Wiona, I can’t thank you enough. Don’t worry about my dad. When he wakes up, everything will come to light. I’ll be waiting for you here tomorrow.”
After saying goodbye, Wiona hurried back to Hawthorne Hall. She’d been running around all day, dealing with a hundred things, and by the time she got there, she was so tired she just sat in the car, too drained to even move. “Let me just rest for a minute,” she murmured, closing her eyes in the back seat, making no move to get out.
