Annette had been sulking in her room for two days straight. She made a point to avoid running into Wiona, just to dodge any awkwardness. But now, hearing the news, she felt a mix of shock and happiness. Honestly, it was good news, no matter how she looked at it. She couldn’t hide in her room forever, could she? It was time to get out and find out what was really happening.
“Quick, help me with my makeup. I’m going to dinner in the dining room tonight.”
Meanwhile, Conrad scooped Wiona up and carried her back to her room. He set her gently on the bed and asked, “Are you hungry? I can have dinner brought up if you want.”
Wiona was starting to feel a lot better by this point. His question made her smile. “If we just eat up here, wouldn’t all your hard work go to waste?”
She’d already noticed, ever since she’d walked in, that the whole main hall was filled with fresh flowers. There were so many little romantic touches everywhere, she could hardly take it all in.
“I’ve been looking forward to this dinner all day,” she said. “Let’s eat downstairs. I don’t want this day to be just a memory of us eating in the bedroom.”
Conrad’s eyes softened as he looked at her flushed cheeks. His expression warmed, and that familiar spark was back. He was never the type to hesitate, especially not now that things were official between them. Without a second thought, he leaned down and kissed her gently on the cheek.
He murmured, “Alright. Get ready, and meet me in the dining room in twenty minutes?”
Wiona froze, not even daring to move. “O-okay!”
When she finally heard the door close, she buried her face in the covers. Total meltdown. She realized tonight was supposed to be their wedding night, right? But she was pregnant… Would he really want to do anything with her like this?
Her thoughts drifted back to her wedding with Jace. That night, he told her flat out, “We don’t have feelings for each other. So, don’t expect me to touch you tonight. If you’re fine with it, we’ll just be married in name. Maybe, if I ever feel something for you, we can take the next step. Any objections?”
Back then, she’d been forced into marrying Jace anyway, so his attitude was actually a relief. She’d agreed immediately. Even later, when he suggested IVF, he never had any intention of touching her. She hadn’t felt disappointed, just relieved. Now, she realized she’d never really cared for Jace. She only saw him as a husband she could depend on. There was always something about it that didn’t feel real.
It’s her instincts that had been warning her. Jace didn’t have any real feelings for her. She’d sensed his insincerity, and that’s why she could never really give herself to him.
