Phil lingered by the dining room doorway, catching the uncertainty flickering across her face. He gave her a gentle smile. “You’ll have to get used to it soon. This is your home now.”
Home? Wiona had never really thought of it that way. Hawthorne Hall, her home? She’d always felt like a guest, even as she started to settle in more and more. Even after Conrad proposed, she hadn’t stopped to consider that this grand house could actually become hers.
But now that Phil had said it out loud, something inside her shifted. Hawthorne Hall suddenly felt different, like maybe she was a part of it too.
“Thanks for the reminder,” she murmured.
She’d barely caught her breath, finally starting to feel comfortable, when a small whirlwind launched herself at Wiona from behind.
“Wiona!” Alice’s voice was bright and excited—she hadn’t seen her all day.
Phil reacted instantly, scooping Alice up in one swift movement. “Miss Alice,” he said, trying to keep her in check, “you need to be gentle. Wiona’s carrying a baby now, so you’re going to be an aunt.”
Alice blinked, looking puzzled. “An aunt? What’s that? Is it something you can eat?”
Wiona couldn’t help laughing. “Alice, you’re adorable. Come on, let’s eat first, then I’ll explain everything.”
Alice was delighted, grabbing Wiona’s hand as they walked into the dining room together. That’s when they spotted Conrad and Annette, already seated.
The air between mother and son felt tense, like an invisible cloud hanging over the table.
“Mom, Jace!” Alice chirped, waving at them. “What a coincidence, you’re here to eat too?”
Annette’s lips twitched at her daughter’s innocence. “Alice, come here and sit next to me.”
But Alice clung tighter to Wiona. “I want to sit next to Wiona.”
Conrad stood and pulled out the chair beside him. “Wiona is sitting here. You need to go back to your seat.”
Alice shrank a little. Her brother could be intimidating, especially when he was serious like this. But with Wiona there, she mustered some courage. “No. I don’t care who else is here, Wiona is mine today!”
Conrad pinched the bridge of his nose, giving Wiona a pleading look, like he was waiting for her to pick sides.
