His voice quivered with happiness, almost like he could barely contain it.
“Wiona, I really have found the most precious treasure in the world.”
“I don’t care about your past, but I’ll admit, after hearing what you said just now, I got a little petty.”
“I’m happy. I’m shocked. And I’m just so grateful fate brought us together.”
“Wiona, I’m so happy.”
He pulled her closer, holding her tight. Wiona blushed, but she didn’t pull away. She let herself melt into his arms.
Then her stomach let out this loud, hungry growl, totally ruining the moment. Wiona pointed at her belly, her cheeks even redder. “The babies are hungry.”
Conrad tapped her little bump. “Then let’s ger breakfast.”
They walked to the dining room, fingers tangled together.
Alice was still catching up on sleep. Phil mentioned Annette had already left earlier that morning.
“Your uncle, Mr. Clements, was taken to the hospital,” he said. “Mrs. Sullivan was really worried when she found out.”
Conrad’s brows creased, but he didn’t say much. He just waited for Wiona to start eating before quietly telling Phil and the others to give them some privacy. Once the room was clear, he turned to Wiona, his tone turning serious.
“Peter… When he was thirteen, his whole family was murdered.”
“You can’t even find news about it now, but back then it caused a bit of a stir.”
Wiona just stared at him, stunned, her words caught in her throat.
Conrad went on, “He was away at boarding school, so he was the only one who survived. His grandparents, parents, little sister… even their dog. All gone.”
“The neighbors on that floor all moved out. The apartment’s still empty. The case was never solved.”
Wiona’s chest tightened. “How did he end up working for you?”
Conrad nodded, his voice softer. “He used to stand on the street with a sign, begging the police to find the killers and give his family justice. But some powerful people tried to bury the story. The whole case got shut down after three months. He wasn’t scared, though. He quit school, made a scene everywhere, just trying to get people to listen. Someone tried to hurt him, but my father stepped in and saved him. I guess he saw something strong in Peter, so he decided to help him, maybe even train him to be someone I could trust when I grew up.”
“After my father passed away, I kept up his training. Sent him to the military for a few years. He’s never let either of us down. He’s smart, tough, and unbelievably capable.”
Wiona could feel her heart pounding. Peter really had gone through hell.
