Divorced and Pregnant My New Life with a Billionaire Drives My Ex Crazy novel Chapter 55

Alona’s face went pale, every trace of color draining away. In this family, she never feared that shriveled old woman. The person she truly dreaded was her husband, Daniel.

Her mother-in-law was just an uneducated woman from the countryside. If she hadn’t lucked out and caught the eye of Daniel’s father all those years ago, she’d never have what she did now. Besides, the old woman was on her last legs. Alona only bothered to play nice because it was expected.

But Daniel was a different story. He was the one who really called the shots.

Her own family was falling apart, getting worse with every passing year. If the Salisbury family hadn’t propped them up, bankruptcy would have hit long ago. Alona had always relied on the fact that she and Daniel still had a bit of history, especially that time when things got so bad they almost divorced and Daniel ended up begging her to come back. She used those memories to cling to what little influence she had left.

But lately, her standing in the Salisbury family was slipping fast. If Daniel wanted to divorce her now, she’d have no way to stop him.

She never thought Daniel would care this much about what happened tonight. He had always seemed unhappy that Wiona wasn’t really a Morgan, and he’d even thought about replacing her. Why was he suddenly defending her? Hold on… he wasn’t defending Wiona at all. He cared about the babies she was carrying.

This was a disaster.

Alona realized she had completely misread Daniel. Guilt and regret twisted in her stomach. If she’d known, she would have handled things differently, made sure it didn’t look so obvious. In the past, Daniel would just turn a blind eye.

She bit down hard on her lip, tasting blood. Then she slumped to the floor, tears streaming down her face. “I swear, I didn’t know, honey,” she cried.

“How could I forget that Wiona’s pregnant? I had no idea Jace would have them switch rooms. It was all just a mix-up.”

“It must have been someone at the furniture company who messed up. Why would I do something so stupid? This is our home. What reason would I possibly have?”

Daniel watched her cry, his eyes cold and unmoved. He didn’t know every detail of her scheme, but he could see she wasn’t really sorry. After all these years together, he knew exactly what was behind those eyes. It’s fear, not guilt.

“Alona, if you’re done pretending you want a peaceful life here, I can give you an out.”

“If you ever pull something like this again, I won’t let it slide.”

He left it at that, not spelling everything out, not exposing her completely. It was the last bit of dignity he’d allow them both. Without looking at her ghost-white face again, he turned to Jace.

Daniel’s glare was sharp. “You, come with me.”
