Now that she was finally out, Wiona had no plans to go back.
“Grandma, you really don’t have to worry about me. I’m somewhere safe,” she said into the phone.
Grandma Grace’s voice was sharp and loving at the same time. “What are you saying? Of course I worry about you. You’re my granddaughter-in-law. Who else am I supposed to fuss over? Listen, I know you’ve been through a lot this time. Kellen almost got you hurt, so I’ve already made her leave. Jace got his punishment, too. I’m on your side, always. But you can’t just run off from the hospital without telling anyone. Do you realize how dangerous that is? Jace looked for you all night. He looks like a different person now. Can’t you just let this go? When you’re married, you have to talk things out and help each other through.”
Wiona knew there was no changing Grandma Grace’s mind, but she also refused to just do as she was told.
With a soft, apologetic sigh, she said, “Grandma, I pushed Kellen at the hospital yesterday. I was angry. You can check the security cameras if you want proof. But Jace probably didn’t mention that, for Kellen’s sake, he slapped me. He even came to my room with scissors, planning to cut my hair off to make it up to her. He told me to apologize to Kellen, just to call it even.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t help but laugh bitterly at how ridiculous it all sounded. “Grandma, Jace doesn’t love me. If we keep pretending, we’ll just end up hating each other.”
There was a long silence. Wiona wondered if the call had disconnected when Grandma Grace finally spoke up, her voice heavy and tender. “I understand now. I’m sorry. Alright. Give me your address. I’ll send you a few things. Don’t go neglecting yourself just because you’re on your own. Promise me.”
Wiona was caught off guard by how calm Grandma Grace was about it all. After a moment’s hesitation, she sent her current address. If Jace found her, she’d just move again. She couldn’t bear to let Grandma Grace down.
With a solid reason for leaving, Wiona settled into her new routine. She tried to cook for herself after ordering some groceries online, but the results were so bad she ended up tossing the entire pot. Cooking clearly wasn’t her thing. Hungry, she just ordered takeout.
When someone knocked, Wiona thought her food had finally arrived and hurried to the door.
But the moment she opened it, Molly rushed in and threw her arms around her.
“Mrs. Salisbury!” Molly gasped. “You’re still eating takeout? That’s so bad for you! Let me cook instead.”
Molly was lugging a giant bag over her shoulder and squeezed into the apartment without waiting for permission. Wiona scrambled to get out of the way as Molly plopped the bag onto the floor.
