“Oh, Tina, stop it,” Wiona laughed, shaking her head.
“Seriously, Wiona, without you, would this studio even be here today?” Tina grinned. “You’re our superstar of our whole team.”
Tina tugged Wiona into the office. Inside, Wiona spotted Mr. Peels, her old university mentor, and her heart gave a little jolt.
“Mr. Peels, it’s been so long,” she said, her voice catching a bit.
“It’s wonderful to see you back, Wiona,” he replied, his eyes shining with pride. “Your recent comeback? People are still talking about it. Oh, and I have some good news for you. Cassian’s coming back to the country.”
Cassian had been Wiona’s second mentor, the one she’d met thanks to Bronwen after gaining fame as Vivian in that big competition. Bronwen taught her how to draw. Cassian showed her what it meant to be a real designer, pulling her deeper into the world of design. But she’d barely had time with either of them before life pulled her away.
Now, Cassian’s return was news to everyone… except her. She found out last.
A year and a half ago, when Wiona had decided to give up her career and marry into the Salisbury family for the Morgans’ sake, Cassian had been furious.
“I don’t care if you get married,” he told her. “You can still chase your dreams after marriage. Why throw everything away?”
She hadn’t been able to answer. Back then, she was already starting to suspect the truth about her own family. The fear of losing them made her give up everything she loved.
“I just want to be a good daughter,” she’d whispered.
Her parents had no idea about her secrets, that she was both W and Vivian. That was why she tried to bury her past. In the end, nothing stayed with her—not her family, not her dreams.
Even though Cassian was angry, he still sent her a wedding gift before heading overseas and cutting off contact. He’d disappeared from her life.
Thinking about all of this made Wiona’s chest ache, sharp and raw.
“I understand,” she said quietly. “I’ll go visit him when I get the chance.”
Since it was a reunion and Wiona’s official return, they had to celebrate. Tina, who’d just made a killing from a project with Jace, insisted on splurging for a fancy dinner.
That’s how Wiona ended up in a luxury hotel restaurant, where the dinner cost more than most people’s rent, and ran straight into Kyle.
Madison was beside him, her arm linked with his. The two of them stood together in the lobby, talking quietly, their closeness the kind you couldn’t fake. It reminded Wiona of how she and Kyle used to be, and for a second, she just froze.
