**Raindrops Kissing Silent Streets – by Aadi Sharma**
**Chapter 18**
Alison’s anxiety was not unfounded, and Renee was acutely aware of the weight of that truth.
“Don’t fret. I’ve got everything under control,” Renee reassured her, a hint of determination in her voice.
With a sense of urgency, she began to outline her plans to Alison. “So, what’s your next move after the divorce?” Alison inquired, her curiosity piqued.
“I’m going to start a business,” Renee declared, her voice steady despite the tumult within.
“What? Seriously? You’re launching a business?” Alison’s surprise was palpable, her eyebrows shooting up in disbelief.
“Yeah, I mean, I can’t just roll over and give up on myself just because the marriage is over,” Renee replied, her resolve hardening with each word.
“Why would you want to start from scratch? That sounds like a monumental hassle!” Alison chuckled, her tone light but laced with genuine concern. “Hey, remember? We both studied the same thing. Why not just join my company instead? You know I’ve been on the lookout for exceptional talent. If you hadn’t been busy with your own venture, I would have snatched you up ages ago!”
Renee hesitated, a polite smile gracing her lips as she tried to navigate the conversation. “Well… I don’t think that’s right. You’ve worked so hard for the past year or two to build your company. If I step in now, it would feel like I’m taking advantage of your efforts.”
“Absolutely not! Don’t even think that way! You’re exactly the kind of versatile team player we need! Come on, just say yes!” Alison’s enthusiasm was infectious, and Renee could feel the warmth of her friend’s belief in her.
As soon as Alison had heard about Renee’s entrepreneurial aspirations, she had made it her mission to convince her to join forces.
Alison had always been told by her family that she lacked the capability to succeed, and now she was determined to prove them wrong—especially to her parents and her brother.
Renee, however, remained noncommittal, only promising to give it some thought.
That night, as the moon cast silvery shadows across her room, it was Alison’s animated chatter on the phone that finally lulled Renee into a restless sleep.
In the depths of her slumber, the shadows of nightmares resurfaced.
In her dream, she found herself being pulled into a dark, unending sea. Beneath the surface, a sinister cage awaited her. She was thrust into it, her limbs trapped and powerless.
Her oxygen tank dwindled, leaving her to drift aimlessly in the abyss, a silent spectator to her own demise.
Before her, vibrant schools of fish danced through the water, their colors a stark contrast to the darkness surrounding her. Sunlight filtered through the depths, refracting like distant stars from an alien galaxy.
It was a hauntingly beautiful sight, yet it felt suffocating.
