Emmy just grinned. “Let’s wait until the press conference goes well tomorrow. Then I’ll sign, no problem.”
“You can relax, Mr. Sparrow. I’m not someone who goes back on my word.”
She even added, “But if you’re really worried, you can record this right now. A little insurance for our deal.”
“No need for that.”
Ben waved her off, trying to hold on to what was left of his dignity.
“I trust you, Emmy. We don’t need anything so formal.”
“Well, since you put it that way…” Emmy’s tone shifted. “Why don’t you tell me what else my husband is hiding? Save me the trouble—and money—of hiring a private investigator.”
Ben couldn’t help but laugh. This girl—she really knew how to turn things around. If he refused, he’d just look petty and distrustful, not exactly a good look for someone in his position.
And she was right. If Emmy wanted to find out the truth, she could just hire the best detective agency in the city and pay whatever it took. No secret could stay buried forever.
It was just a matter of time.
So Ben lowered his voice and finally answered her.
“Your husband’s identity is top secret, but as his wife, you have the right to know.”
“He’s a special forces legend, the kind that only answers to the top. His codename is Dragon.”
“He’s part of the Dragon Scale unit. Eight of them in total, including him. They’re the most secretive, most powerful guardians in the entire capital.”
“As for his firefighter job…” Ben paused. “That’s just a cover.”
He looked at Emmy, who was staring at him in stunned silence, and added softly, “You really lucked out, Emmy.”
—
Emmy left the tearoom feeling like she was walking through a dream. Ben’s words kept replaying in her mind.
Special forces legend.
Dragon.
Dragon Scale unit.
Guardians of the city.
She always knew James was impressive, and she knew he’d been in the military, but she never guessed he’d be the kind of man people told stories about.
The same man who shared her bed, who made her breakfast every morning, who surprised her with a penthouse and a Porsche—he was actually that extraordinary?
“All done talking?”
James had somehow appeared right beside her, his big hand sliding naturally around her cool fingers.
