Emmy called Abriella right away.
As soon as the call connected, Abriella’s dramatic wails burst through the line.
“Emmy! I’m dying here! It’s like I got trapped in a sweatshop—I’m working myself to death!”
Listening to her friend’s exhausted complaints, Emmy couldn’t help but laugh. “What happened this time?”
“I only slept five hours last night! The work never ends, I swear! My boss is worse than the devil—he squeezes every last drop out of us!”
Emmy had noticed lately that Abriella was always swamped, sometimes taking half a day to reply to messages.
“At least you get weekends off, right? Why not go golfing to relax a bit?”
“Weekends? Are you kidding?” Abriella sounded even more hopeless. “I’ve got case files lined up all the way to the end of the year! Emmy, I can’t even go to the bathroom without taking paperwork with me!”
Emmy was stunned. “You’re serious?”
“For real! I—”
A man’s impatient voice suddenly cut in on Abriella’s end. “Are you finished? They’re waiting.”
“Right, coming!” Abriella instantly shifted into kiss-up mode, then rushed to say, “Emmy, gotta run, the boss is on my case. Catch up later!”
Beeep... beeep... beeep...
Emmy set her phone down and let out a sigh.
She thought about calling James, but figured he was probably buried in work too. He had made time to be with her during her exam days, but as soon as the tests were over and he dropped her home, he vanished into his own busy schedule.
She considered calling her mom, but then remembered how her mom had been acting lately. Ever since she signed that partnership with Deep Blue Tech, her mom had been hyper-focused on her new project, promising to have a prototype finished before the end of the year.
Staring up at the ceiling, Emmy realized she might actually be the most bored person she knew.
The sense of doing nothing made her uneasy.
So, the next morning, Emmy got up early and headed out.
She stepped onto the emerald-green course in a sharp white golf outfit and a baseball cap.
“Just us.” Isabel let out a sigh. “You know how it is with people in our circle. It’s complicated—everyone’s got their own agenda. I might look like I have a ton of close girlfriends, but honestly, I’m kind of jealous of you and Abriella.”
She looked at Emmy, her eyes earnest.
“Emmy, can I trust you? Like, really trust you?”
Emmy didn’t answer right away. She turned, lifted her club, and sent another ball flying with a perfect swing.
The ball soared across the sky, bounced, rolled, and dropped into the hole again. Only then did Emmy glance over with a gentle smile.
“Isabel, want to take the next shot?”
Isabel caught the subtle dodge and a flicker of disappointment crossed her face.
She took the club from a staff member, walked over to the tee, and got into position.
Right before her swing, she asked, as if casually,
“Emmy, have you seen Mr. Nelson lately?”
