Will was camped out in the hallway outside the hospital room, slumped against the wall. His eyes were red and tired—you could tell he hadn’t slept at all.
As soon as he spotted James, Will straightened up, his voice rough and strained. “James, I want to use my vacation days now. Abriella needs someone by her side.”
James nodded, all business. “That’s fine. Just make sure someone covers your shifts.”
“Thanks, James.” Will gave him a grateful nod, then turned to Emmy, looking lost and hurting.
“Emmy, what happened last night? What else did Abriella go through?”
Emmy shot a worried glance at the hospital room, then gestured down the hall toward the balcony. “Let’s talk out there.”
The three of them stepped onto the balcony, the wind cutting and cold.
James automatically shifted closer, blocking the wind so Emmy wouldn’t freeze.
Emmy didn’t sugarcoat anything. She laid out the mess with Abriella’s family and everything that had gone down the night before, not leaving out a single detail.
Will listened, his eyes growing even redder, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles popped.
Emmy let out a sigh. “The Sullivan family’s been losing money for years. Bad investments, business going downhill. Now they’re desperate and want to use Abriella in some arranged marriage to save themselves.”
“Unbelievable.” Will’s voice shook as he slammed his fist against the railing. “Why do these rich families always throw their own kids under the bus for money? Abriella spent fifteen years suffering alone, and when they finally get her back, this is how they treat her? How can they live with themselves?”
He honestly couldn’t wrap his head around it.
Neither could Emmy.
She used to think Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were decent people. Now she realized they only seemed that way when their own interests weren’t at stake.
While they were talking, noise suddenly erupted from the hallway.
“What’s happening?”
Will spun around and rushed inside.
Emmy and James hurried after him.
Steve had just shown up, looking furious as he tried to push past the bodyguards Emmy had set outside the door.
