Steve pressed his lips together and stayed silent. He probably realized now just how reckless that punch had been. Rubbing his brow in frustration, he couldn’t help glancing at the closed door of the hospital room. It was shut tight. He couldn’t see a thing.
After a long silence, James finally spoke up. “Steve, come with me for a second.” Then he turned to Emmy, and his whole expression softened. He reached out and gently guided her to sit down on the bench in the hallway.
“Don’t be upset. I’ll go talk to him. Just relax here for a bit, okay?”
The two men walked out to the balcony, one after the other. The wind out there was even colder than before.
“You really went too far this time,” James said quietly.
Steve pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a hard drag. The smoke hit him wrong and he started coughing.
“I gave you a chance. You’re the one who blew it,” James continued. “From now on, you and Abriella should just go your separate ways.”
Steve looked up fast, totally stunned. But before he could say anything, James added, “Some people, once you miss them, that’s it. There’s no point chasing after something that’s already gone.”
He gave Steve a solid pat on the shoulder. After all these years, James knew Steve was smart. He’d figure it out for himself sooner or later.

Emmy’s four-month prenatal checkup was a long haul, with test after test. But with James right there next to her the whole time, she didn’t feel bored or tired at all. Honestly, everywhere they went, people couldn’t stop staring at them with envy.
This was the top private hospital in the city. Only the rich or well-connected came here for maternity care. But even among the wealthy, it was rare to see a husband stick by his wife’s side for every appointment. Most women had a maid with them, maybe their mother-in-law if they were lucky.
James was different. Tall, handsome, confident—he was all in. He took care of Emmy, doted on her, never seemed annoyed or impatient, always running little errands just for her. Guys like him were basically one in a million.
“Is there anything she should avoid eating? She’s been craving spicy food, but she has stomach problems. Is that okay?”
“She’s four months now—anything we need to pay extra attention to in our… relationship?”
“What about exercise? Besides walking, is there anything else she can do? How long should she walk each day?”
He just kept going, question after question, until even Emmy was stunned. The doctor, a warm and patient woman, answered every single one with a smile.
At the end, she looked at Emmy with a gentle grin and said, “Mrs. Nelson, you really found yourself a great husband. He’s more attentive than any soon-to-be dad I’ve ever seen.”
“These days, men like him are hard to find. You’re a lucky woman.”
