Three in the afternoon at Pearl Hospital.
Emmy followed the hotel manager into the private room they’d reserved. Tyler was already there, waiting for her.
“Mr. Nelson, sorry to keep you waiting.” Emmy greeted him with a bright smile.
Danny set a folder down beside her on the table, then quietly slipped out.
Tyler smiled kindly, his eyes drifting to her rounded belly. “How far along are you, Ms. Eincoln?”
“Five months,” Emmy answered, her hand resting gently on her stomach. There was a soft warmth in her gaze, unmistakably maternal.
“Did you find out the gender?”
She didn’t hesitate, her eyes curving with her smile. “We did. Boy and girl—twins.”
Surprise flickered across Tyler’s face. Then his smile grew wider.
“Twins? A boy and a girl?” His tone was full of awe. “You’re really blessed. Twins like that are a rare and lucky sign in families like ours.”
“Your husband must be thrilled.”
But Emmy just laughed softly. “I haven’t told him yet. He likes the suspense.”
Tyler blinked, a little caught off guard, but he didn’t push. He just gave another gentle smile and pressed the service bell.
“My father should be here soon. Can I get you something to drink, Ms. Eincoln?”
A server walked in almost instantly.
“Bring Ms. Eincoln a fresh fruit and veggie juice, please. Serve it warm.”
“Right away, Mr. Nelson.”
Emmy thanked him in a quiet voice and settled back in her chair. The wait dragged on, so she pulled out her phone and tapped James’s profile picture.
What are you up to?
A few seconds later, a photo appeared. James was in his bright orange firefighter uniform, helmet on, chinstrap tight against his defined jaw. The angle was from below—he must’ve been inside the fire truck—and somehow it made his deep eyes and sharp nose look even more striking. Emmy’s heart did a little flip.
His text came right after.
She had just put her phone away when the door swung open.
Jared entered, surrounded by his staff. His presence was commanding, filling the whole room with just a look.
Emmy stood up right away, offering her hand. “Mr. Nelson, nice to meet you.”
Jared shook her hand briefly, his gaze serious and lingering for a moment before he let go.
The three of them took their seats. The huge round table, meant for ten, was set with only three chairs—the rest had been cleared to make things feel more private and important.
Soon the food arrived. As the lazy Susan began to turn, Emmy noticed it was moving slower than last time—just the right pace for her to take food comfortably. She shot Tyler a glance, surprised he’d actually listened to James’s suggestion.
The dishes were extravagant, each one more exquisite than the last.
Once the door closed again, Jared spoke, his voice low and steady. “Ms. Eincoln, I really enjoyed our talk the other day.”
He paused, his sharp gaze fixed on her. “I’m curious. You’re so young, and you’re a genius in AI. What made you interested in rural aid? It’s hard work, exhausting, and the payoff takes years. Why do it?”
It was a pointed question, the kind where the wrong answer could come off as fake.
