Emmy was ready for this. She met Jared’s eyes, calm and collected, her voice steady.
“To be honest, I only got involved in this project by chance. The whole idea wasn’t even mine. I really didn’t know the first thing about agriculture.”
“It was Sylvia, the project lead, who brought me a complete proposal. She explained how much potential technology has in agriculture, and since the Dome system fits so well with almost all basic farm equipment, I got interested.”
Her honesty seemed to impress Jared. “I see. So even though you didn’t know much at first, you managed to learn everything about these machines so quickly. You must have worked really hard, Ms. Eincoln.”
Emmy almost laughed to herself.
She couldn’t exactly tell him it was all thanks to her freakishly good memory and this strange knack for understanding machines. One look at the blueprints or manuals and everything just stuck in her mind.
So she just lowered her eyes, her tone humble and sincere. “Once I decide to do something, I put my whole heart into it. I owe that to the project and to everyone who trusts me.”
Jared nodded, pleased.
“Alright, Dad, let’s not talk about work the whole time,” Tyler jumped in, shifting the mood.
He turned the lazy susan and set a beautiful bowl of deep sea fish maw soup in front of Emmy.
“This is really good for the baby, Ms. Eincoln. Have some more.”
Emmy thanked him, scooped some soup, and tasted it. The flavor was rich and comforting.
She’d only had a couple of spoonfuls and hadn’t even gotten to the details of the collaboration with Jared when—
The door burst open, slamming against the wall.
A woman in a dark green dress stormed in. Her face, carefully maintained and elegant, looked cold as ice. A string of huge emeralds shimmered at her neck, and her sharp eyes swept over the room with authority.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Jared’s shout made the whole table rattle.
“Stop!” Tyler’s voice cut in at the same time, tight with urgency.
Emmy froze for a second.
Then the burning pain on her cheek hit her, lighting every nerve on fire. Anger flared up, fast and hot.
Without thinking, she grabbed her glass of juice and tossed it right in the face of the woman who slapped her.
At the same time, she yelled, “Micah!”
The bodyguard, waiting just outside, rushed in immediately.
