Teresa switched the channel without a word.
Just as expected, the agriculture channel was running a news segment on the Torch Programme.
On the screen, a young woman stood next to a shiny piece of farm equipment, answering a reporter’s questions with confidence and ease. She had these bright, determined eyes and a kind of energy that just lit up the whole frame.
“Emmy, that’s Sylvia, isn’t it?” Teresa asked.
Emmy nodded. “Yeah. She spent the entire New Year at the base, just to make sure the prototypes would be ready before the spring planting.”
Teresa watched a moment longer, her fondness growing with every second. “She’s so pretty. You can just tell she’s got a good heart. Down-to-earth, hard worker, the kind of girl anyone would like.”
Emmy smiled to herself. Sylvia had really pulled it off. The TV station had come to do the interview a couple of days ago—Emmy had known about it in advance, of course. She’d planned everything carefully. The app had launched just yesterday, and now today, the interview was everywhere.
On the TV, Sylvia’s clear voice carried through the room. “If you want to learn more about our Torch smart farm equipment, check out our official Torch App. You’ll find detailed information and demonstration videos for every model.”
Emmy picked up her phone and searched for the app. She downloaded it, registered, and logged in. The interface was clean and simple, with all sorts of machines listed.
What caught her off guard was that, even though the app had only been live for less than a day, each machine already had a number of reservations shown underneath. She figured some of these early birds were probably hoping to ride the wave of media attention, buy a machine, do a review, and snag a bit of online clout. Some were probably just rich and curious about the latest tech. And then there were those who genuinely needed the equipment—the big farm owners.
Either way, it was a strong start.
She opened her messages and sent Sylvia a note.
Make sure every single product in the first batch gets checked thoroughly. No mistakes allowed.
Sylvia replied almost instantly.
Don’t worry, Ms. Lincoln. I’ll personally keep an eye on everything. Nothing will slip through!
Then another message popped up.
Oh, and Ms. Lincoln, we got word back on the support policies. We’re in the third tier.
Emmy frowned.
Third tier? That wasn’t much support at all. She’d thought for sure they’d make it into the second tier, at least.
What was it that… disappointed him?
She thought about how awkward her own position must look to him.
A cold little smile curled on her lips.
Jared. He was always preaching about keeping work and personal life separate, about not letting anything private affect their partnership. But clearly, he was still holding back. That was why they’d only been given third-tier support. It was a kind of help, but also a warning. Maybe even a test.
Emmy glanced at her, catching that slightly over-the-top enthusiasm, but didn’t say a word. She just pressed her lips together, lowered her head, and quietly started eating.
Some things really didn’t need to be spelled out.
For three days in a row, all of Emmy’s meals came from The Water Pavilion. Every dish was different, beautifully presented, light yet nourishing—exactly what she liked.
She didn’t ask, and she didn’t comment.
James never showed up.
But Abriella came every day, chatting with her, keeping her company, never once mentioning James.
Emmy’s health finally stabilized, and Teresa’s mood lifted as well.
Right after lunch that day, there was a knock at the door.
Teresa assumed it was a nurse. “Come in,” she called.
But when the door opened, her expression darkened right away.
It was that butler from the Nelson family, the one she’d met twice before.
