Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 709

“What do you want?” Teresa jumped to her feet, her whole body tense and ready. “Are you ever going to leave us alone?”

The butler stood in the doorway, holding a tablet. He bowed deeply to Teresa and to Emmy, who lay in bed.

“I’m sorry, Teresa. Madam.”

It was the first time he’d ever called Emmy “Madam.” Every other time, it was always “Ms. Lincoln.” That sudden change set Teresa even more on edge.

He straightened, still the picture of polite professionalism. “A few days ago, what Mrs. Nelson said and did wasn’t about looking down on the Drennon family. She never meant to insult you.”

“It was… a test.”

“Mrs. Nelson realizes now that she went too far, that her actions led to a misunderstanding between you and Madam. She asked me to come and apologize.”

He hesitated, then added, “But Mrs. Nelson is currently grounded by the family head, so she can’t come in person. She can only apologize through a video call.”

With that, he tapped the tablet. Instantly, a perfectly put-together, elegant woman appeared on the screen.

Emmy’s eyes landed on her face and she froze, her heart pounding. In her previous life, she’d stood beside Jared as he climbed to the top, but the First Lady then wasn’t this woman. Even though they’d met just a few days ago, this face was still unfamiliar, still strange.

She glanced at her mother, searching her eyes for answers. “Is that really… Mrs. Nelson?”

Teresa’s expression was grim. She gripped Emmy’s hand tightly and gave her a sharp nod. She didn’t believe for a second that all those cruel words were just some kind of test. How could anyone be so cold and condescending, then call it a misunderstanding? Still, she was curious—why would the untouchable Mrs. Nelson humble herself enough to apologize now?

The woman on the screen began to speak, her voice unexpectedly soft.

“Teresa, Emmy. May I call you that?”

“Emmy, first of all, I want to sincerely apologize to both of you for my behavior before.”

She dipped her head slightly, as if making a formal apology.

“So, please… forgive me. I hope you can understand the position I’m in as an elder.”

It was a flawless speech. An apology, sure, but she still managed to put herself above them, like some kind of judge handing down a verdict.

Teresa felt sick to her stomach. The whole thing was ridiculous. Her daughter was James’s legal wife, not a product for inspection. Who gave them the right to “test” her like this?

Meanwhile, outside the hospital room, the butler had left the door slightly open when he came in.

James was standing just outside, cradling a huge bouquet of flowers, his tall frame pressed against the wall. He heard every single word of his mother’s so-called apology.

His brow furrowed slowly.

He pulled out his phone and typed out a message, his fingers flying.

Not sincere enough.
