When Abriella heard the news, she could practically taste the gossip. No way she was letting this one go.
Still, she hesitated. "Someone like the head of the Nelson family... that's way out of my league to look into..."
She bit her lip, stewing for a moment, then finally stomped her foot. "Okay, screw it! I'm going for it!"
"I'm going to find Steve. There's no way, with his skills, that there's anyone he can't dig up dirt on!"
The two of them chatted for a while longer. Abriella dumped every rumor she knew about the Nelson family on Emmy, giving her a crash course in all their drama.
By the time evening rolled around, Abriella burst back into the room, stomping her feet in frustration.
"I'm so pissed off! Steve is such a jerk!"
She flopped down on the edge of the bed and started complaining. "He says he can't investigate it! He told me no one in the whole Capital would dare look into the head of the Nelson family!"
"Absolute crap. Steve's supposed to be this big-shot, what could he possibly be afraid of? He's totally messing with me!"
"And get this, he wouldn't even let me into his detective agency this time! After everything I've done for him, all those years as his assistant, and he doesn't even care!"
Emmy couldn't help but laugh at how worked up Abriella was getting.
"If it's too much, then let it go," she said gently.
In her heart, Emmy figured that if this woman really existed, she'd slip up eventually. As long as she kept her eyes open, the truth would come out sooner or later.
...
The next morning.
After Emmy finished her IV drip, a nurse came in to take out the needle.
Lorelei followed, holding a clipboard, her expression as cool and unreadable as ever.
She checked Emmy over quickly. Emmy asked, "Can I go home yet?"
Lorelei glanced at the chart and replied, "You should stay for two more days so we can keep an eye on you. We'll do a full checkup the day after tomorrow. If everything looks good, you can go home."
The nurse finished up and left the room.
Abriella immediately stationed herself at Emmy's side, glaring at Claudia like she might lunge at her any second.
Lorelei stood nearby, arms crossed, her brow furrowed.
Emmy, though, just leaned back against her pillows, looking utterly unbothered, like the woman in front of her wasn't her sworn enemy.
Claudia glanced around at the bodyguards, who were keeping a close watch on her, and gave a small, bitter laugh.
"Just me, and you need this many bodyguards to keep an eye on me."
"Seems I must be pretty important in Ms. Lincoln's eyes."
Emmy met her gaze, voice cold as ice. "Say what you want, then leave. None of us want you here."
Claudia's smile wavered for a second before she turned her attention to Lorelei, her eyes full of hidden meaning.
"Dr. Hall, I used to think we were on the same side. Guess I was wrong about you."
"Looks like you don't love James as much as I thought."
