Lorelei’s eyes drifted over to Claudia, her expression as calm as still water.
“Ms. White, save your little games. I know what you’re trying to do.”
She let out a soft sigh. “I’ll admit it. I used to like James.”
“But real love isn’t about locking up something wild and beautiful, just so you can call it yours.”
“It’s about wanting him to fly higher than anyone else, to see a world bigger than anyone else could imagine... even if I’m not the one sharing that sky with him.”
Claudia stared at her for a second, then scoffed, rolling her eyes.
“Wow. That sounds so selfless.”
“But let’s be honest, you just didn’t love him enough to fight for him, did you?”
A mocking little smile tugged at her lips as she turned her attention to Emmy.
“No wonder James picked you over her.”
“You get pregnant so fast, find out who he really is, and you’re still willing to have his kid.”
“Ms. Lincoln, your love is something else. So deep, so moving.”
Emmy’s eyes narrowed just a fraction.
She had to admit, Claudia was made of steel. Evelina was locked up, Emmy herself had lost a child, and she’d been all but kept under guard in this hospital. Even her husband Ben barely showed up anymore, whether he was avoiding her or just busy with work.
Most people would have crumbled by now, but not Claudia. She had bounced back, stormed right into Emmy’s room on her own, and managed to hit everyone where it hurt most. Emmy almost felt a tiny flicker of respect for her. Almost.
Too bad Claudia used her strength for all the wrong reasons.
Emmy kept her voice cool and even. “Whether I love him or not, whether I’m having his baby or not, it’s none of your business.”
“If you came here just to start drama, you can leave.”
Claudia just smiled, a glint in her eyes. “Actually, I came to tell you something you probably don’t know yet.”
She paused, letting the moment hang in the air.
“James killed his own brother. Did you know that?”
Emmy’s eyes went wide, shock flashing across her face.
But Abriella couldn’t hold back any longer. She practically shouted at Claudia.
The bodyguards didn’t even try to stop her. If anything, they stepped aside to give her space.
Claudia stumbled back and dropped to the floor, but she was still smiling. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, her eyes cold and wild.
“One slap for a secret like that...”
She looked up, licking the blood from her lips, staring straight at Abriella.
“Totally worth it.”
“My husband will be here to get me soon.”
“James pretending to be Mr. Nelson... I’m guessing you don’t want him to hear about that, right?”
She leaned into Abriella’s name, her voice soft and sharp at the same time, like a snake sliding through grass.
“So how are you going to explain that slap to my husband, Abriella?”
“I’ll kill you!”
Blinded by fury, Abriella grabbed Claudia by the collar, ready to hit her again.
