“Don’t try to fool me,” Grandma scoffed, shaking her head. “You haven’t looked him in the eye even once since you walked in. And that boy… he’s following you around like a wilted eggplant, just waiting for you to notice him. The second you look away, he looks like he’s lost his soul.”
“Come on, tell me the truth. Did James do something to hurt you? Tell me, sweetheart. I’ll stand up for you. I’ll make sure he knows exactly what he did wrong.”
Emmy let out a long sigh.
Even with her mind sometimes foggy, Grandma could always see straight through her.
She looked right into Grandma’s eyes. They were cloudy, but sharp with wisdom, and after hesitating for a moment, Emmy decided not to hide anything anymore.
Grandma was the person James cared about most. She deserved to know everything.
So Emmy told her. She explained how James had hidden who he really was, how Mrs. Nelson had looked down on her and her mom, how the Nelson family wanted to keep her kids but push her and her mother aside. Emmy told it all, calmly and honestly.
Grandma listened quietly.
Now and then, her eyes would go distant, as if she was struggling to remember something. But most of the time her gaze was clear, and Emmy could see anger flickering there, even if she tried to hold it back.
Still, Grandma never said a word while Emmy spoke.
When Emmy finished, Grandma’s eyes looked sharper than Emmy had ever seen.
She squeezed Emmy’s hand and spoke, her voice strong and clear. “You did the right thing, child.”
“In that family, you can’t let them see even a hint of weakness. If you do, even if you end up marrying into the family, everyone will step all over you. They’ll chew you up and spit you out, until there’s nothing left.”
Emmy was stunned.
She stared at Grandma. Her usually murky eyes were now bright and piercing.
Her voice had lost all its usual gentle, childlike warmth. Instead, it was full of insight and authority, like someone who’d been in charge all her life.
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat as a wild thought crossed her mind.
She whispered, barely able to believe it, “Grandma, you…”
Grandma patted her hand, confirming everything without a word.
Her memory was back. She was completely herself.
