Valerie's POV
The next morning, I was hiding out in the main library. It was the one place people seemed to leave me alone.
I was just looking at the spines of the old books when Isabella found me. Of course, she did. She glided in like she owned the place, which I guess she kind of did. She was holding a thick book like it was a prop in a play.
Her smile was instant and bright. It was also completely fake, like a cheap piece of plastic.
"Valerie, darling! There you are."
Her voice was like warm honey, but I could feel the stickiness of it. It was the kind of sweet that makes your teeth ache.
"I was just thinking about you," she purred, stopping a few feet away from me. She looked like a perfect angel in the sunlight streaming through the tall windows.
I leaned back against a bookshelf and crossed my arms. I wasn't buying any of it.
"I've been so worried about the Crimson Fang Elder," she said, her face a perfect mask of concern. "It must be so stressful for you, being caught in the middle of everything. How is he recovering?"
I just stared at her for a second. The question was a test. She wanted to know if I was still in contact with Kai's pack.
"He's stable," I said. My voice was flat. A brick wall.
"Oh, that's wonderful news!" she gushed, putting a hand on her chest like she was truly relieved. The performance was flawless. She was a much better actress than Brenda ever was.
Brenda was all sharp edges and obvious insults. Isabella was smooth, her attacks hidden under layers of fake kindness. It made her way more dangerous.
"What you did… it was simply miraculous. Truly," she continued, her eyes wide. "You have such an incredible gift."
She tilted her head, a gesture that was probably meant to look innocent and curious.
"It must have been a terribly complex procedure. I can't even imagine."
