Emma ignored him. Sebastian quickly got into the car and sped off, the tires kicking up a spray of slush.
Theodore stood in the snow, looking down at the dirty patch staining his clothes. He made no move to wipe it away. He just stared after the disappearing car, a single thought echoing in his mind: *She's with him. She's really with him. They came out of the same house this morning. Are they living together? Does that mean she and he…*
A wave of bitter jealousy washed over him. He had been her husband for five years, and he had never even truly touched her.
Sebastian drove all the way to the wellness center with a grim expression. Once they arrived, he turned to Emma, his face a mixture of defiance and guilt. "Emma, I'm sorry."
"For what?" she asked, confused.
"I don't like him coming to find you, and I don't want you to talk to him," he said, sounding like a pouting child. "So I drove off before you had a chance to say anything."
"So that was it," Emma said under her breath. She shook her head with a slight smile. "It's not like I wanted to talk to him anyway."
"Really?" Sebastian's eyes lit up.
"Of course," Emma said seriously. "If I still had feelings for him, I wouldn't have divorced him."
"Emma! Let's go get your treatment!" Sebastian was suddenly bursting with energy. He hopped out of the car and rushed to open her door.
The path to the wellness center had been cleared of snow and salted, so it wasn't icy. Sebastian carefully helped her inside.
Due to the heavy snow, there were fewer patients than usual. Robert, the older man, wasn't there.
He was usually there, rain or shine. Even if he wasn't getting a treatment, he would come by just to chat for an hour.
A sense of unease settled in Emma's stomach.
That was the unspoken fear at the center—that one day, a familiar face would suddenly stop showing up.
"Emma, you're here. Come on in," Dr. Crimson called from the therapy room. "It's quiet today."
Emma nodded. "Is Mr. Robert not here?"
