She strode forward, closing the distance, and looked him directly in the eye. “Let’s cut to the chase. You’re causing me a lot of trouble. Please stop.”

Up close, she realized he was very tall, with a strong, imposing presence. Even though he tried to suppress it, a hint of the noble air of someone accustomed to power leaked through. She had only ever felt that kind of pressure from one person–Jasper.

The unease she had pushed down resurfaced. She wasn’t sure anymore.

“I apologize for causing you trouble. Please forgive me. I just wanted a chance to get to know you.”

Her tone dripped with sarcasm. “I doubt anyone wants to get involved with a lewd pervert.”

The bodyguards standing nearby flinched. Pervert? Damn! She’s got guts!

“I didn’t intend to make a bad first impression. You have every right to be angry. Perhaps I can make amends.”

“No need! I just hope that incident stays buried!” She didn’t want to think about that night at all.

He chuckled. “I don’t think I’m that ugly.”

“Mr. J, let’s be frank. I’m not interested in your pursuit, and I’m not looking for a partner. Please stop bothering me. You’re already affecting my work.”

He fell silent, finally refraining from odd remarks.

Tatiana, thinking he had finally given up, softened her tone slightly, patiently adding, “Besides, you’re clearly well–off. Pursuing other girls would surely be easy for you. Don’t waste your time on me. To be honest, I already have a daughter. I’m really not worthy of you.”

“Do you have a husband?”

She answered casually, “He died young. I still miss him. I plan to remain a widow.”

The atmosphere suddenly turned frigid, chilling her to the bone. Even though he said nothing, she could feel the darkness radiating from him.

“You loved him very much?”

When no answer came, Tatiana glanced up. The raw, suppressed emotion swirling in his startled her, silencing the words on her lips.

“Sorry.” He pressed his fingers to his temples. When he looked up again, the terrifying emotion was gone, as if it had never existed. “Since your husband passed away, that doesn’t prevent you from finding someone else. I don’t mind.”

Is this man incapable of taking a hint? Her carefully regained composure nearly shattered.

“Well, I mind! I’m loyal. Till death do us part.”

“Mm. I believe in persistence. Water wears away stone.”

“Can’t you understand plain language? I will never accept you! Understand? Find another target!”

“What would you like to eat? You must be hungry.” He turned and signaled the chef to bring the food. “No need to get upset. Anger takes energy. You won’t have strength if you’re hungry.”

His attitude completely exhausted Tatiana’s last shred of patience. She picked up her water glass and threw the contents in his face.

Gasps echoed around them.

Water dripped from his hair. His eyes were downcast, his face wet, his expensive suit soaked.

She asked, word by word, “Are you sober now? Can you understand me? Stay away from me.”

A nearby bodyguard started forward to help, but he waved him off.

He let out a low chuckle. “Sorry.”
